People in South Carolina may recall that in December 2010, a 27-year-old woman was found dead in the home of former beer CEO August Busch IV. The woman's mother appeared before a judge on a recent Tuesday in a wrongful death hearing, hoping to get permission for her attorneys to depose Busch, a witness, and two police officers who interviewed the witness.
Other people were present in the home the night of the death, a fact the woman's mother was not aware of initially. A witness disclosed this information to attorneys, while police interviewed the individual, and then withheld the information for unknown reasons. An accidental overdose is suspected, but the deceased female's mother insists that is not the case as she doesn't believe her daughter willingly took narcotics.
No cause of death has been found as of yet. The woman's ex-husband, however, filed a wrongful death suit. The legal action was pursued on behalf of their son, and Busch agreed to a financial settlement of $1.5 million. Complicating matters even more are the motions filed by the son's maternal grandparents, insisting they should receive a payout for the damages. An appeals court ruled in their favor after a Cape Girardeau judge ruled against this motion.
The civil wrongful death case continues, as additional motions by family members and representatives of the deceased female and her son are heard. Personal injury lawsuits can help seek damage compensation for any incident in which someone is hurt or killed. When cause of death is uncertain, however, skilled attorneys are needed to gather vital information, examine the laws, and guarantee a positive outcome for the victim and their family.
