LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) - Alex Rodriguez took the next step in his rehab process, playing in a minor league game.

Rodriguez was placed on the disabled list on July 25, one day after suffering a fractured left hand after being hit by a pitch from Seattle's Felix Hernandez. He was designated hitter for the Class A Tampa Yankees in a rehab game on Friday, going 0-for-3 with a walk. He is expected to play third base on Saturday and may meet up with the Yankees when they travel to Tampa Bay for a three-game set against the Rays.

Rodriguez grounded weakly to short in his first plate appearance, then walked and scored a run in the Yankees' 7-6 loss to the Lakeland Flying Tigers. He struck out in his final two plate appearances.

"I felt pretty good," Rodriguez said. "I just wanted to stay in one piece."

Rodriguez said he isn't sure how far his rehab will go past Saturday's game or if he will be ready to join the Yankees on Monday.

"Everything feels good, but it was the first time," Rodriguez said. "I just want it all to work out so I can get back with the boys again. I am chomping at the bit."
