Dwayne Jackson, former ABA Jacksonville Giants player, appeared in studio (WZNZ AM 1600 Jacksonville) ?on January 31, 2012, for an interview with Host Richard Miller of MilleronSports.com. ?The interview centered upon his experience with the reality show "The Big Time" and his recent basketball career change. ?"The Big Time," a Budweiser Reality Show, will air on ABC this weekend, Saturday, February 4th at 4:00 p.m. ?The episode will feature three basketball sports contestants competing for a shot at fulfilling their dreams of playing professional basketball. ?For Dwayne, his dream is to play in the NBA. ?
If you have been to a Jacksonville Giants game or have followed his career, you know that this is a realistic goal. ?Last year, Dwayne played for the Heartland Prowl, an ABA team, where he averaged 34 points per game and scored 52 points in a game against the Giants that season. ?It was no coincidence that Head Coach Kevin Waters recruited Dwayne to the Giants for this season. ?While the broadcasting team of Christian Laettner (former NBA star, Duke Standout, and Olympic Dream Team Gold Medalist) and Richard Miller (radio sports talk host) were providing the play by play for Game 4, Miller told Laettner about Dwayne being the highest scorer in the ABA last season. ?Laettner's response was: ?"maybe I should give him the ball more often." ?Dwayne referred to his start with the Heartland Prowl as "a blessing." ?Dwayne is always quick to give GOD praise for such blessings. ?Dwayne said that he will soon "see what God has in store for me." ? ?
Miller asked Dwayne about what makes him such a talented basketball player. ?Dwayne's response: ?"I can score the ball with the best of them." ?I give "100 percent all the time" and am an "energy player." ?Nevertheless, he noted that a player "can always get better with shooting and ball handling." ?Now, Dwayne's routine workout is to hit 200 shots per day and work out physically so that he "gets his mind ready for each game." ?In reminiscing, Dwayne gave a shout-out to his former coach Tim Maloney. ?Coach Maloney, now with the Baylor University Bears, not only taught him basketball skills, but also directed him and shaped his character, for which Dwayne continues to be grateful.
As Miller has done all week with his guests, he questioned Dwayne as to his pick for the Super Bowl. ?Dwayne, without hesitation, responded that he was standing by the New York Giants since he likes QB Eli Manning as well as Defensive End Jason Pierre-Paul, Cornerback Corey Webster and Defensive End Justin Tuck. ?Secondly, Miller inquired as to who had a better dunk this week:?
Blake Griffin or LeBron James. ?Dwayne responded that Blake "can jump out of the gym" and LeBron can catch an alley-oop, then jump over a player and then dunk. ?Never having seen that sort of dunk, Dwayne chose LeBron. ?When Miller asked for dunking advice, Dwayne instructed: ?"your head has to be near the rim for a good dunk." ? ?
Now that Dwayne is no longer under contract with the Jacksonville Giants, he has returned to his home in Fort Myers, Florida, where he will be involved with the community and coaching with the AAU and Team Difference. ?Since his ultimate goal is to play for the NBA, he will contact Christian Laettner, who is now an assistant coach with the Mad Ants, an NBA Development team in Fort Wayne, Indiana. ?Dwayne shared that he practiced and worked out with the Mad Ants in the summer of 2011. ?Dwayne also stays in contact with A.C. Green, former NBA player who played more consecutive games than any other player in the NBA, which has earned him the nickname "Iron Man."?
Leaving the Jacksonville Giants for Dwayne is bitter sweet. ?He feels that each day is another step closer to the NBA. ?However, he will miss many of the players and coaches he has met along the way. ?Dwayne plans to stay in contact with former Giants player Nick Wallery and current Giant Anthony Lumpkin, who are like brothers to him. ?Undoubtedly, Dwayne has a plan, one which gets him closer to the big time everyday. ?As he shyly expressed, "it's not the last that you will hear from me." ?Dwayne promised Miller that, if he wins "The Big Time," he will come back to give Miller the interview.?
