CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian judge on Wednesday set June 2 as the date for the verdict and sentencing in the trial of ousted President Hosni Mubarak, which could put the man who spent nearly 30 years as one of the Arab world's key strongmen on death row.
Mubarak is accused of complicity in the killing of protesters during the 18-day popular uprising that pushed him from power in February of last year. More than 800 people were killed during the uprising, many of them demonstrators shot dead by security forces.
A guilty verdict would make Mubarak the first leader ousted during the Arab Spring uprisings to face legal punishment by his own people.
A ruling of not guilty ? a distinct possibility ? could set off new a new round of unrest.
Egyptians have closely followed the seven-month-long case, and many accuse the council of ruling army generals who took power when Mubarak stepped down of dragging out the proceedings.
Critics of the military's handling of the transition to democracy say the trial's pace reflects a wider lack of justice for those killed in the uprising. Egyptian courts have so far not punished any police officers for the protester deaths.
Others have criticized the prosecution, saying it has failed to present strong enough evidence to support a murder charge.
Judge Ahmed Rifat announced on Wednesday the date of the final hearing, in which Mubarak will receive both his verdict and sentence, saying it would be open to media coverage. Most media have been barred from the majority of the hearings since the trial's start.
The prosecution is calling for the death penalty for Mubarak and five others, which would be by hanging.
Mubarak has rarely spoken during the trial, and on Wednesday turned down his last chance to address the court during the defense's final arguments.
"I have no comment," Mubarak told the judge Wednesday, adding that what his lawyer said was enough.
Later, during the session that lasted more than nine hours, Mubarak fell asleep.
The defense argued that Mubarak is still president, and thus can only be tried for treason or in a special court. It has also blamed the uprising on foreign agents who allegedly sneaked into the country to destabilize it.
Mubarak's Interior Minister during the uprising reiterated that argument Wednesday in comments to the court that lasted an hour and a half.
"I reaffirm before you that there were foreign saboteurs who desecrated Egypt's pure land," said Habib el-Adly. He ran Mubarak's security services and faces the same charge.
He said the plotters "were supported by internal criminal elements with the aim of undermining Egypt's international and regional standing and attempting to destabilize its political, security and economic stability." The plot involved "killing peaceful protesters, storming prisons to free terrorist and criminal elements, vandalizing public and private properties and burning policemen inside their vehicles."
Dozens of policemen men were also killed during the uprising, many during attacks on police stations and prisons.
El-Adly offered his condolences to the families of those killed, prompting lawyers in the room to shout, "Butcher! Execution!"
Six other ranking security officers are being tried in the same case. Two of them, plus Mubarak and el-Adly, could be hanged. Mubarak, his sons Gamal and Alaa and a close associate are being tried in a separate case on corruption charges.
Also Wednesday, Amnesty International said Egyptian security forces had used excessive force against demonstrators earlier this month, killing 16 and injuring many more.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Republican leaders in the House of Representatives will consider removing a contentious funding provision in a multi-year $260 billion transportation bill in a bid to ensure its passage in the chamber.
With no Democratic support in sight and enough Republicans balking at the provision because of an unpopular change in transit construction funding, Republican leadership prepared to open the floor to amendments this week.
Infrastructure spending has long been recognized as an economic stimulus, and Republicans and Democrats are feeling election-year pressure to create jobs.
The most recent figures from the Transportation Department show that 27,000 jobs are created for every $1 billion in federal spending on road, bridge and transit construction.
Congress has been unable to agree on a new law authorizing long-term federal spending on transportation programs, which usually runs for five or six years. The last one expired in 2009 and a series of temporary spending bills have filled the gap since. The current one expires on March 31.
The five-year bill in the Republican-controlled House contains a handful of "hot button" issues that insiders say must be weighed carefully and possibly amended before leadership can deliver a majority of votes necessary for passage.
A key stumbling block is a provision that would no longer fund mass transit projects through the Highway Trust Fund - a guaranteed revenue stream financed through federal gasoline tax receipts.
Instead, the bill that headed to the floor would pay for transit projects through a one-time, $40 billion transfer from general tax revenues, and provide no future dedicated source of funding. Money for future transit initiatives would be subject to annual congressional budget flights, like scores of other federal programs fighting for shrinking outlays of domestic spending.
'BACK TO THE DARK AGES'
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, a former Republican House member who has met with members on the legislation, told reporters on Monday that the House version was "a terrible bill" that "takes us back to the dark ages."
Democratic Representative Jerrold Nadler of New York co-sponsored an amendment with Republican Steven LaTourette from Ohio to strike the provision that they say would threaten transit funding over the long term.
"To eliminate transit's dedicated funding stream and relegate funding to the political machinations of the appropriations process is, effectively, to kill transit funding," Nadler said.
Even if the House manages to remove that obstacle and passes the bill, transportation legislation faces an uphill battle in Congress.
It will be a challenge to negotiate compromise legislation with a two-year, $109 billion bill working its way through the Senate. A Republican amendment to that highway proposal to force approval of the Keystone XL oil pipeline is a likely flashpoint.
Neither chamber is incorporating a six-year, $476 billion infrastructure proposal put forward on Monday by President Barack Obama in his 2013 budget. The plan is similar in scope to other proposals he and Democrats have proposed previously and went nowhere in Congress.

"This promises to be a stimulating and fascinating evening," said COAD Dean Urs Gauchat. "Students will learn more about what their teachers are thinking about, parents will learn about the caliber of the faculty, donors will appreciate the intellectual milieu, faculty will expound to their colleagues, and alumni will be exposed to the extraordinary thinking of faculty."
The faculty presenters, all architects, include associate professor Richard Garber, assistant professors Taro Naraharo, Georgeen Theodore and Andrzej Zarzycki; and university lecturer Jose Acala.
Theodore http://www.njit.edu/news/experts/theodore.php, who is also an urban designer, has participated in and led large-scale projects in the U.S. and internationally. As an associate professor in COAD's School of Architecture, she teaches design studio in both the undergraduate and Master of Infrastructure Planning programs. A key goal in Theodore's work is to bring large-scale design issues and methodologies to the forefront in both programs.
Garber http://www.njit.edu/news/experts/garber.php teaches design studios and directs a unique design and manufacturing laboratory, the FABLAB. His work uses computer simulation and computer numerically-controlled hardware to generate innovative design, construction, and assembly solutions. He has practiced in the United States and Japan and been associated with firms such as Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Gluckman Mayner Architects. He has collaborated on award-winning projects including the Mori Arts Center, Hotel Puerta de America in Madrid, and the MoMA Store in New York City.
Zarzycki is a designer and educator who uses digital tools to create experiential architectural spaces. His research focuses on media-based environments and on validation methodologies of generative design through building performance analysis and simulation tools. He is a co-winner of SHIFTboston Ideas Competition 2010 and a co-founder of TUTS (Tremont Underground Theatre Space) (the-tuts.org), a design initiative focusing on innovative adaptations of infrastructure into contemporary public spaces and on the integration of digital technologies into urban life. He has taught at Rhode Island School of Design and received a master of science in Architecture Studies from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Alcala has more than 20 years experience in both the practical and theoretical areas of the design field. He has designed electronic projects, furniture, exhibitions and even buildings. He holds 10 patents and has received several awards for his architectural and product design work, and maintains a strong alliance to both disciplines. Six years ago he helped found and today still coordinates COAD's Industrial Design Department. This NJIT work relates to private companies that Alcala co-founded to serve industrial, architectural, urban and sustainable design: (Morozov Alcala Design Laboratory LLC (MADLAB), and the Renewable Energy Laboratory LLC (RELAB). He holds a bachelor's degree in architecture from NJIT and a master's degree in industrial design from Pratt Institute.

Theodore http://www.njit.edu/news/experts/theodore.php, who is also an urban designer, has participated in and led large-scale projects in the U.S. and internationally. As an associate professor in COAD's School of Architecture, she teaches design studio in both the undergraduate and Master of Infrastructure Planning programs. A key goal in Theodore's work is to bring large-scale design issues and methodologies to the forefront in both programs.
Garber http://www.njit.edu/news/experts/garber.php teaches design studios and directs a unique design and manufacturing laboratory, the FABLAB. His work uses computer simulation and computer numerically-controlled hardware to generate innovative design, construction, and assembly solutions. He is also principal of the New York City architectural firm GRO Architects.
Naraharo, a registered New York architect, teaches digital design studio and courses on gaming and physical computing at NJIT. He won the Peter Rice Prize, the Digital Design Prize, and a REAI Research Grant Award from Harvard University. He has practiced in the United States and Japan and been associated with firms such as Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Gluckman Mayner Architects. He has collaborated on award-winning projects including the Mori Arts Center, Hotel Puerta de America in Madrid, and the MoMA Store in New York City.
Zarzycki is a designer and educator who uses digital tools to create experiential architectural spaces. His research focuses on media-based environments and on validation methodologies of generative design through building performance analysis and simulation tools. He is a co-winner of SHIFTboston Ideas Competition 2010 and a co-founder of TUTS (Tremont Underground Theatre Space) (the-tuts.org), a design initiative focusing on innovative adaptations of infrastructure into contemporary public spaces and on the integration of digital technologies into urban life. He has taught at Rhode Island School of Design and received a master of science in Architecture Studies from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Alcala has more than 20 years experience in both the practical and theoretical areas of the design field. He has designed electronic projects, furniture, exhibitions and even buildings. He holds 10 patents and has received several awards for his architectural and product design work, and maintains a strong alliance to both disciplines. Six years ago he helped found and today still coordinates COAD's Industrial Design Department. This NJIT work relates to private companies that Alcala co-founded to serve industrial, architectural, urban and sustainable design: (Morozov Alcala Design Laboratory LLC (MADLAB), and the Renewable Energy Laboratory LLC (RELAB). He holds a bachelor's degree in architecture from NJIT and a master's degree in industrial design from Pratt Institute.
