Holidays in Zanzibar

It may not be a common sight or a typical idea that you would form when you think of Africa as your holiday destination, unless you were thinking in the lines of holidays in Zanzibar. For those who might have got starved of sunshine and who might have had their lives imposed on them in terms of professionalism, client meetings, office hours and deadlines, holidays in Zanzibar are the perfect launch into a new world, where life takes a different course at a different pace. Holidays in Zanzibar would let you breathe, feel and live life like you might not have done for a long while ? nature in every bit, every ounce, making up for all that you might have missed over the years and making you long to come back.

If you thought time moves on and you could never return to revisit the past, think again ? or at last, holidays in Zanzibar would make you think again.

Here is a group of islands that have refused to be associated with the rat race and have chosen to be their own kings, revelling in the luxury of nature?s laps and looking back in time. The Stone Town might be a small place alright, but it could do wonders to your spirits when you are on your holidays in Zanzibar, leaving you firmly in touch with nature and in our own ancient past ? and it is not without reason that the town has been declared a World Heritage site. If you love architecture and you thought you had seen it all, you only have to take a walk along the winding alleys and the bustling market places to have a glimpse of the past. The majestic old houses of Arab style and the crowded market places would be in sharp contrast to the good part of the day that you might have spent on the beaches, in the water and under the sun.

Your holidays in Zanzibar would only be made even more memorable by the terrific choices of water sports, by the amazing range of spices that are in plantation, and by all the colours that nature has to offer to fill your sights with, in the water, along the lengthy coasts, by the tall trees and by the vast beaches of white sand.

Zanzibar Holiday is a lot more than what you could comprehend through virtual media ? they are real life experiences that would last a lifetime.

An Introduction... - BluntDinerz Food and Drink Blog. Las Vegas ...

Hello Readers! Ah, my grand birth onto BluntDinerz has been pushed off for a few days, but I am here to at least give you the benefit of my fashionably late personality. So let me digress... My name... well it's AnonServer... well it's not my legal birth name, but it is what I shall remain under here, because I do not want any backlash from my workplace, or any real backlash personally... I will admit, the blog posts I put up will be... eh, blunt, no pun intended. I will vent my anger, I will expose flaws within the workplace, and I will try to walk you all through the adventure of being me, a typical server in Las Vegas.

Now, I won't ever expose the business I work for, but it's pretty popular out here, and it's a pretty big chain, so I'll leave you all with that to try and put the pieces together over the weeks and months of blog posts.

Pretty basic epilogue of what's to come, so let's get right into the nitty gritty---

Readers... whether you're a server or just a guest at some wonderful establishment... what exactly is the percentage you're suppose to leave for tips? Anyone? Well, I'm not going to wait for your comments just to say what I already know: 20%... Yup! 20% is what you are suppose to leave a server... and that's 20% of the base of the bill... not what your total amount is after coupons, comps, or discounts... it's the total price of all your food that you eat/bought. So, a $100 bill is produced, what exactly do you leave? 20% of 100 is 20. Basic math people... so basic that almost everyone tends to mess it up. Why exactly is this? Are people cheap? Well of course you are cheap! I've come to realize this over my course of time serving. Especially from foreigners, but we'll get into foreigners another time when I bring up some past/recent stories. Why is it when a bill is over $200, people leave $15 thinking that is perfect? Is it because they think $15 is a lot? Well, yes, it seems that way, but you're wrong... because of tip share! Yeah, most restaurants require a server to pay tip share at the end of their shifts that goes towards bussers, hostesses, and bar tenders. This tip share is equivalent to 3% of total sales, not 3% of tips, but the total sales the server makes! How shitty is that? So, a $200 bill, 3% of that is $6. $15 minus $6 equates to... $9. Yup, you just left your perfectly good server a $9 tip for a $200 bill. Fuck that customer (hey, I told you I was going to be blunt!). We remember faces and next time you come in, you won't get the best service, I promise you that.

I understand the economy is bad though... so sometimes I can feel sympathetic when an old couple comes in and buys like a couple burgers, coffee, and is having a good time with each other. They don't really care about us talking to them or really want too much of a social service... I mean they most likely are using money from retirement or social security to eat out, just enjoying their age as much as possible. So them leaving $2 on a $25-$30 check isn't so bad, and I tend to just let it slide, they're usually fast about eating, and conversing, and then leaving... which means I just turned the table fast, and it's pretty much ready for another group of people to come in and possibly leaving a better tip.

Tips are everything to a server. We work for these tips, we need those tips in most cases just to make bills or get something to eat. We are taxed heavily, so our checks are crap. Minimum wage is shit, so how can you really expect us to earn a lot without tips? All of you, who think they know serving, and go eat somewhere nice, then leave a shitty tip, clearly don't know anything about serving at all. I can't seem to stress this enough! TIPS ARE EVERYTHING! You, cannot leave crappy tips, when you do, you're affecting another persons lively hood! Literally. Period. End of fucking story.

I hope you enjoyed my first blog post, it was a basic intro to myself, and the beginning part of me trying to change the views of everyone who goes out and leaves shitty tips. Even if I convince one person to view tipping differently, I'll feel my work is a success. I might have helped a person make rent on time because they got that extra few bucks a few times during their shift.

Until next time readers... Don't forget to tip your server!

Use New Facebook Changes to Help Promote Your Business Online

facebookJust like the seasons, technology changes rapidly in today?s fast-paced world. Just like evolving technological devices, popular social media sites are also growing?adding new features while eliminating others. Facebook, in particular, has recently made several alterations to its ?pages? in an effort to give webmasters more control over both the physical site and its analytical results.

Because Facebook is switching up its game plan, businesses will also need to change their strategy in order to stay effective. To assist with this process, Lunarpages has highlighted some of the most major alterations to Facebook, and how you can use them to promote your site online.

Profile Image and Cover Photo

One of the most readily apparent changes Facebook has made is the addition of the cover photo, a large strip across the top meant to showcase your page. Although the cover picture is in addition to your profile image, the former is much larger and more likely to be eye-catching. The only catch: businesses aren?t allowed to have any calls to action in the cover photo?you?re not allowed to encourage people to ?like? your page, or even provide any contact information such as a web address or phone number.? Consequently, this requires more creativity in drawing attention to your business Facebook page without blatantly saying, ?Come here and like us!?

Posts are Highlighted, Larger, and Pinned

Another thing Facebook is intent on changing is the way we share stories with others. In an effort to cut down actual text, Facebook is now making pictures and videos larger and more prominent on News Feeds. In addition to being eye-catching, putting a larger emphasis on visual media will help build a relationship with fans, as they can flip through your pictures or watch a posted video.

Should a company want to emphasize a specific post, it is possible to ?highlight? the story so that it will span all the way across the Timeline, as opposed to staying in one spot. Also, Facebook has made it possible to pin a story to the top of your Timeline for up to a week?ultimately increasing the likelihood that your fans will see it.

Sharing Company Milestones

Facebook?s new feature that allows companies to share big events in the life of your brand or company is another way to make the Timeline on your business page more interesting and interactive. Any time something exciting or prominent happens, share your good fortune with your fans through Facebook Milestones. Not only will it post to the News Feeds of your fans, but it will also help focus the Timeline on just your company?s story and nothing else. Because posts from fans are now on a separate page, it?s likely that visitors will be spending more time on your Timeline than anywhere else. Simply put, the more visually stimulating and interactive you can make your Timeline, the more successful it will be.

Facebook Offers

Currently, only a few select companies have access to Facebook Offers, an application comparable to sites such as LivingSocial or Groupon. Yet it?s only a matter of time before the doors are opened to the public, making Facebook Offers like Facebook Deal on steroids.

Facebook Offers are sent through the News Feeds of your fans, increasing its visibility. Additionally, it?s pretty easy to share the Offer, whether it?s through the post itself or after the Offer is claimed. Because of this Facebook has made it easier to spread the word about a good deal or discount that is being offered, and can ultimately assist in increasing traffic to the page. This could be a real help to small businesses, who could offer things such as a ?free webinar? or ?free fifteen-minute consultation.? And if a time-limit is placed on the Offer, it will encourage people to act quickly rather than procrastinate and potentially forget.

Facebook Insights and Administrative Panel

Another way the Timeline has changed is with the location of the Insights, a tool that tells a site administrator of new notifications and gives them access to the ?back-end? controls of a Facebook page.? This administrative control provides an idea of how many people are visiting a Facebook page, where they?re from and what type of person they are, which can be valuable information for a business attempting to reach a specific market. Basic information from Facebook Insights is now also available publicly, making it possible to keep an eye on your competitors as well!

Facebook Reach Generator

For those who use (or are interested in) paid Facebook advertising, rest assured that pay-per-click marketing on this social media site hasn?t been forgotten. The newly announced Facebook Reach Generator is crafted to reach more fans than the News Feed can. According to Facebook?s director of global business marketing, Mike Hoefflinger, pages currently only reach about 16 percent of their audience every week with posts. By contrast, the Facebook Reach Generator ads can reach 50 percent of fans weekly and 75 percent monthly.

In addition to being streamed into mobile and news feeds, Facebook Reach Generator ads will always ?be on,? as they?re placed on the right side of a business page helping to further the connection between an audience and a webmaster.

With so many changes being made, it could seem like advertising on Facebook (and other social media sites) is becoming more challenging. In order to keep up, devote a few minutes to reading Facebook Tutorial Guides available on the web or contact their Ads and Business Solutions page for additional help. This way, you?ll not only learn how to efficiently use Facebook?s new features, but you?ll know exactly how to tailor them to best suit your business.

Identity politics fragment society, says ... - Womens Views on News ...

Sarah Cheverton
WVoN co-editor

This week, Dr Rowan Williams went on the record to tell racial, sexual and sexuality equality activists that it?s time for us to quit talking about the differences between us and start talking about what unites us.

You can find coverage from The Telegraph here, although I can?t help but think the headline would have been more accurate if you took out the colon and added an apostrophe?

He started off by acknowledging what such activists have achieved under the banner of ?identity politics?:

?Identity politics, whether it is the politics of feminism, whether it is the politics of ethnic minorities or the politics of sexual minorities, has been a very important part of the last 10 or 20 years because before that I think there was a sense that diversity was not really welcome.

?And so minorities of various kinds and ? women began to say ?actually we need to say who we are in our terms not yours? and that led to identity politics of a very strong kind and legislation that followed it.?

No problems there, but then he went on:

?We are now, I think, beginning to see the pendulum swinging back and saying identity politics is all very well but we have to have some way of putting it all back together again and discovering what is good for all of us and share something of who we are with each other so as to discover more about who we are.?

Funny, because as a feminist activist, I thought that was exactly what social justice movements already do.

?Identity politics?, as Dr Williams calls it, is not about asserting a politics of difference that demands to be recognised; it?s about demanding an even playing field.

It?s not about calling for recognition of difference; it?s about promoting inclusion on the basis of what we share.

To understand this, you first have to understand that our culture?s dominant viewpoint is that of white, wealthy, middle-aged men.

These men are disproportionately represented in government, the judiciary, business, the media and even (as one glance at Dr Rowan himself might confirm) in religion.

Identity politics is necessary ? and will continue to be ? all the time this is the case.

Because as long as this small social group dominates, it is necessary for everyone outside it to remind them ? and ourselves, and each other ? that being different from white, wealthy, middle aged men does not exclude you from membership of the human race.

My own feminist theory and practice, for example, holds that my uterus makes me different from a man, but it doesn?t exclude me from humanity.

Revolutionary, but definitely not divisive.

From this view, identity politics does not fragment society ? the domination of one social group over others does. Identity politics are not divisive. The social conditions that create these movements ? generation after generation ? are.

I wonder how Dr Williams would feel if we tossed the ball back into his own court and started talking about the divisiveness of ?identity religion??

I?m an atheist and know nothing about religion, matters of faith or how believers should organise themselves or each other. Because of this, I like to leave religion to the people I consider to be experts on the subject ? like believers and clerics.

It?s one of the reasons that while I might often share the beliefs of ?militant atheists? such as Richard Dawkins, I don?t feel the need to outlaw or attack religion, religious beliefs, or religious practices (until they start stepping on the safety or agency of others, that is).

I don?t feel qualified to make statements about anyone?s religious belief, but maybe that?s one of the reasons I?m not Archbishop of Canterbury.

And if Dr Rowan Williams really wants to understand identity politics, perhaps his first step might be to reflect on the fact that if he was a woman, he wouldn?t be Archbishop of Canterbury either.

Wisconsin's highways show routes to GOP's primary

(AP) ? Well-traveled routes that serve as Wisconsin's vital arteries also provide a window into the competing hopes for Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum.

Romney can roll up a solid win in Tuesday's presidential primary with a strong showing along the state's east-west Interstate 94, which bisects Milwaukee's GOP-rich western suburbs.

Santorum's fading hopes rest on swamping Romney in cities and towns along north-south Interstate 43, which lead from Milwaukee north through the industrial and blue-collar base of the Fox River Valley.

Wisconsin elections officials are projecting 35 percent of Wisconsin's 3.27 million voters will participate in Tuesday's primary. A large majority of the vote will come from Wisconsin's metropolitan southeast corner and industrial Fox Valley north to Green Bay.

"While you might achieve a victory margin in other places around the state, the percent contribution to the total vote goal, there's just not a lot of numbers there," said Brandon Scholz, a consultant and former executive director of the state Republican Party.

The dynamic favors Romney, whose appeal in the suburbs in Michigan, Ohio and Illinois helped him win those Midwestern primaries this year. Meanwhile, Santorum, who had campaigned aggressively last week in less populous northern and western Wisconsin, planned to return to his home state, Pennsylvania, Monday, all but conceding the state where Romney leads in polls.

Stretches of both I-94 and I-43 also promise to be key general election battlegrounds. The four congressional districts that cover them are represented by Republicans in Congress. Democrat Barack Obama carried the districts narrowly in winning the state easily in 2008, while George W. Bush carried them more easily in his narrow loss of the state in his 2004 re-election bid.

More than Romney, Santorum has ventured away from the suburbs nearest Milwaukee. He was heavily working the upper stretch of the I-43 corridor Sunday, with stops in seven cities including Green Bay, Appleton and Oshkosh.

The former Pennsylvania senator who represented the Pittsburgh area in the U.S. House before that was working hard to come off as a common man. He tossed a few frames at local bowling alleys, swilled beer and stopped in at a Friday night fish fry, a tradition in restaurants and taverns all over the state.

And he's talked a lot about his "Made in America" ideas for reviving the nation's manufacturing sector, which would seem to resonate in a state that's home to motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson's headquarters, plumbing fixture company Kohler and Mercury Marine outboard motors, and dozens of other high-skill, precision manufacturers.

The Fox Valley also is home to the highest concentration of the world's paper manufacturing, good for 10 percent of the employment in and around 16 cities along the river, including Appleton. This blue-collar influence mixes with a conservative evangelical element evident in the anti-abortion billboards that mark the I-43 corridor.

But interviews with voters in these pockets revealed doubts about whether it's paying off in a nomination race Republicans are increasingly interested in winding down and setting up the battle with Democratic President Barack Obama.

Retired sales executive Tom Siewert of Fond du Lac said he's voting for Romney because he thinks it's time for Republicans to focus on November even if it's not the ideal pick for the party. And despite his effort to portray himself as the outsider against the well-funded establishment Republican Romney, Santorum's Washington past is a liability for some voters.

"Senator Santorum is no saint. Nobody is. You spend five, 10, 15 years of your life in politics and you're going to do some things that are not going to look too good to people," Siewert said.

Mary Draheim of Plymouth ? halfway between Green Bay and Milwaukee on I-43 ? supports Santorum and is bothered by what she calls the GOP establishment's rush to nominate Romney. She calls him the "godfather" of the health care bill Obama signed in 2010.

Impressed by what she describes as Santorum's moral convictions, Draheim said: "I'd rather have him than Romney."

Romney and a pro-Romney political action committee are heavily outspending Santorum and his allies in television advertising, especially in the Milwaukee market.

Still, Santorum drew Laurie Stevens and five of her nine children to a small rally outside his state campaign headquarters in the near-west Milwaukee suburb of Brookfield Saturday.

Stevens is among the heavy pocket of evangelicals in the Milwaukee area Santorum can count on Tuesday. "He stands for what I believe," Stevens said. Of his long odds, she added: "I believe in the power of prayer."

And while I- 94 runs through Waukesha County, home of the state's largest evangelical Christian mega-church, Romney is poised to do better in what has become a heavily suburban county and one of the most GOP-rich tracts in the nation. George W. Bush carried Wisconsin's 5th Congressional District, held for decades by Waukesha County conservative Jim Sensenbrenner, with a whopping 63 percent of the vote in 2004.

Westward residential expansion of the metro area has transformed hundreds of square miles of dairy farms and hayfields into a booming residential area heavily populated by Republicans, including young professionals and retirees.

And Waukesha County has a recent pragmatic hue. In 2008, Republican John McCain collected almost 63 percent in the county, double the more conservative Mike Huckabee's total.

"This primary is about beating Barack Obama," said John Kleczka, a retired accountant and Brookfield Republican who ventured a few blocks east to Milwaukee Friday to see Romney in the iconic Serb Hall Friday night. "It's time to stand by Romney. He can win and do the job."

Longtime Waukesha County GOP activist Edythe Cooper is backing Romney because but she wants the front-runner to end the primary campaign now.

"I don't want any more of this squabbling. I don't want any more of the throat-cutting. If we don't unite, we're not going to win," Cooper said.

Romney has hammered a southern ellipse from Milwaukee west to the suburbs of Democrat-heavy Madison, although he did campaign in the Fox Valley's Appleton Friday.

As he has in other Midwestern states, Romney has spent less time with the grass roots and more time courting GOP establishment figures. True to form, he nabbed the backing Friday of Rep. Paul Ryan.

The congressman is a rising national star. But his district also covers the southeastern corner of the state and catches the southern half of Waukesha County, including the bedroom community Mukwonago.

As traffic whizzed past on I-94 outside a Pewaukee hotel, Ryan introduced Romney to an audience of more than 1,000 conservative activists Saturday, sparking louder cheers than either Romney or Santorum, who addressed the forum later.

Pewaukee Republican Patricia Funk walked away from the forum torn, but leaning toward Romney. "I'm torn, but I'm leaning toward Romney," the retired factory worker said. ""We can fight over values, or we can try to win."
