Chairman's USO Tour Show Entertains Troops in Afghanistan

Chairman's USO Tour Show Entertains Troops in Afghanistan

By Army Sgt. 1st Class Tyrone C. Marshall Jr.
American Forces Press Service

BAGRAM, Afghanistan, Dec. 17, 2012 ? The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff greeted and praised troops at two U.S. bases in Afghanistan during his annual USO holiday tour show.

Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, along with his senior enlisted advisor, Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Bryan B. Battaglia, and their spouses visited Bagram Airfield here, followed by a visit to Kandahar Airfield the following day, entertaining troops with what the general called ?some extraordinarily talented people.?

?They're great Americans, and they're patriots,? Dempsey told troops at Bagram. ?And they really care about you. They've given up their holidays. I'm actually very privileged to be traveling with them, and bringing them here to you tonight.?

Battaglia, who spoke after the chairman and before the start of the entertainment portion of the show, had a similar message for service members at both bases.

?As our 18th chairman said, it is, indeed, a privilege and honor to spend part of Christmas and the holiday season with you all,? he said. ?We'd love to stay here with you through Christmas, through New Years, you know we would.?

The sergeant major said while it's unfortunate that most of the troops are unable to be home with their families for the holidays, they are certainly not alone.

?While you're not at home or not able to be home with your biological family to spend the holiday season, you're here, by God, with your uniformed military family to spend it,? Battaglia said. ?And it doesn't get much better than that, right??

Both senior leaders used different, but effective methods, to energize the crowds. Battaglia led service members in a raucous chant of ?U-S-A,? while Dempsey highlighted the troops? individual pride of their units and branches of service.

?Those folks that the chairman are going to introduce you to, in just a minute here, are from a country that you love, they're from a country that you protect, and from a country in which you live,? Battaglia said. ?It's the USA, and that would be the most motivating force right now. Those three letters -- all in unison.?

Dempsey introduced each USO celebrity to kick off both shows. Washington Nationals Major League Baseball players Ross Detwiler and Craig Stammen; Matt Hendricks from the National Hockey League's Washington Capitals; comedian Iliza Schlesinger, winner of NBC's Last Comic Standing; and country music singer Kellie Pickler and her band performed on behalf of the USO.

Additionally, the chairman recognized USO President Sloan D. Gibson, and Shane Hudella of ?Defending the Blue Line,? an organization that donates hockey equipment to military families.

Following both shows, Dempsey showcased his own talent, serenading the packed venues with his rendition of singer Bing Crosby's ?A White Christmas.?

?It is Christmas and I hope that you had a few moments to remember that and to forget about everything else in your life right now,? the chairman said.

Dempsey also praised the troops for their service to the nation.

?I hope you know how proud we are of what you do every day for the country,? he said. ?We're proud of your service. You're all volunteers -- that includes the civilians out there that have come over here to help support the men and women in uniform. And we're really proud of you.?

breaking: NJ Assembly passes online gaming bill, 48-25-3 ...

The state Assembly vote wasn?t quite as lopsided as last time, but the nearly 2 to 1 margin in favor of a revised online gaming bill bodes well for backers as it heads to the state Senate on Thursday.

Still, it?s unclear whether the bill has been amended enough to satisfy Governor Christie, who vetoed similar legislation last year after the Assembly had approved it, 63-11:

One particular note from the press release, about who could play these games anywhere in New Jersey: ?People would be allowed to be from out-of-state, as long as it?s consistent with federal law.?

also from the release:

?We must position New Jersey?s gaming industry to thrive in the 21st Century, and that involves authorizing a legally sound Internet gaming law,? said Assemblyman John Burzichelli (D-Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland), who chairs the appropriations panel. ?This is another key piece of our effort to boost New Jersey?s gaming industry by expanding and modernizing our wagering options. This will rejuvenate our tourist industry while increasing employment, capital investment and much needed urban redevelopment.?

?Most everything else has migrated to the Internet and taken advantage of the consumer and revenue options it offers, and New Jersey?s gaming industry should be no different,? said Assemblyman Vincent Prieto (D-Hudson/Bergen). ?This is a carefully crafted bill designed to ensure Internet gaming on casino games is offered the right way. It?s a much-needed competitive step forward for our casinos that could also raise more revenue to benefit senior and disabled citizens.?

?The Internet has long been a reality, and Internet gaming in New Jersey should now be reality too,? said Assemblyman Ruben Ramos (D-Hudson). ?We have to move aggressively and thoughtfully to position our gaming industry to succeed, and this is another step toward that goal. It will mean economic growth and job creation for our state.?

Under the bill, all Internet gaming would be deemed to take place in Atlantic City and all equipment used in Internet gaming would be required to be located in Atlantic City, except that backup equipment and certain other equipment could be located elsewhere.

In addition, the bill prescribes the permit fees and tax rates applicable to Internet gaming, provides for contributions to compulsive gambling programs, regulates the process for the placing of Internet wagers, provides penalties for violations and provides that promotional gaming credits will include wagers placed through an Internet gaming system.

The bill will now be referred to the Senate for consideration.?

Another bill that revises how casino license fees are calculated passed by a 70-6 vote.

December is the best month to buy a car

4 hrs.

Unless you?re the sort of person who finishes up their holiday shopping even before the first Black Friday ads show up on television, you?re likely racing around trying to figure out what to get for your loved ones.? Maybe for yourself.?

Perhaps a new car is on somebody?s wish list but you?re wondering whether it makes sense to buy one this time of year.? Well, if you can swing the down payment it just might be.? Historical data ? and recent comments by industry executives ? suggest that December is traditionally a good time to buy and this year may yield some especially attractive deals.

?This will be the highest discount period,? contends Jesse Toprak, chief auto analyst for the data tracking firm TrueCar.com.?

The Detroit Bureau:?2014 Chevrolet Corvette breaks cover?

Spring is generally the strongest selling season of the year, buyers often deciding to trade in after watching the old jalopy cough and sputter through the cold.? Autumn brings the traditional start of the new model-year, many buyers racing to showrooms to get the newest and hottest products.

There are, however, a number of reasons why December is a great month for those who can swing a deal on top of the rest of their Christmas and Chanukah shopping.? For one thing, most shoppers are focused on other matters, whether a necktie for dad, some perfume for mom, or toys for the tots.? Showrooms can be downright lonely places this time of year but dealers still have their own bills to meet ? and gifts to buy ? so they?re often in a mood to do what it takes to get you to buy.?

The Detroit Bureau: Nissan opens U.S. Leaf battery plant?

This past year has been a good one for the auto industry. ?The U.S. is one of the few places where the industry is making money,? notes Steve Cannon, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz U.S. After years of recession, the industry sharply cut back production capacity and with demand rebounding faster than expected there?s been less pressure to offer incentives than has historically been the case following a deep recession.

Overall, rebates and other givebacks have been falling in recent months, though that can vary, model-by-model.

Like your local dealer, manufacturers have bills to pay and factories to keep running, so they?re often in a mood to make potential buyers happy when demand might otherwise be low.?

Watch TV and you?ll be barraged with ads for the various holiday specials.? Regional marketing managers just might be hoping to meet their quotas.? Brands might be locked into a race to see who can declare the biggest sales or market share.?

The Detroit Bureau: BMW teases new M6 Gran Coupe?

You?ll find some particularly sweet deals on pickup trucks right now, General Motors President Mark Reuss admitting the maker ?missed? market trends in November and wound up with a surfeit of unsold Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups that it wants to clear out before the New Year.

And it?s not alone.? In some cases, an automaker will advertise more aggressive incentives and there are plenty ways to check those out online.? In other instances, however, a company like GM or Toyota will set quotas and encourage dealers to meet them by dangling an extra $500 or $1,000 per vehicle.? The dealer can pocket that money or use a little to sweeten and close more deals.

Some data indicate the best days to buy are December 10, 24, 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31st, at least according to TrueCar?s analysis of past trends ? seven of the 10 best days of the year, it says, measured in terms of the money you?ll save compared to list price.

But smart shoppers can improve their odds just about any day in December.? There are numerous websites, such as TrueCar and KellyBlueBook, that provide pricing information. Don?t be surprised if seemingly fixed numbers, even MSRP, or the Manufacturer?s Suggested Retail Price, don?t always agree.? And take so-called ?invoice? prices with the proverbial grain of salt. What the deal actually pays is usually a fair bit less, says TrueCar CEO Scott Painter, because of so-called ?holdbacks? and other discounts.

You?re likely to get your best deals on discontinued and leftover models, as well as vehicles such as those GM pickups that haven?t been selling as well as expected and are in over-supply.

Some experts have suggested buyers get their best deals when they?re grumpy, perhaps because sales people think the customer is more likely to walk if they don?t come up with a good deal.? It certainly helps not to be overly enthusiastic and signal you?re ready to buy no matter what.

TrueCar?s Painter also stresses that while you always want to get a good price, demanding the rock-bottom number isn?t always the best deal in the long-run.? A smart shopper may be willing to pay a bit more for a dealer they can trust, one that has a good reputation, the right hours, perhaps a loaner program for when your car is in the shop.

But do your homework and December just might land the car of your dreams under the tree.

PFT: What we learned from 49ers-Patriots

Falcons tight end Gonzalez celebrates after a touchdown against the New York Giants in the first half at their NFL football game in AtlantaReuters

With six different games matching up teams with winning records, yesterday was hyped by the NFL as ?Statement Sunday.? And while it didn?t deliver a lot of particularly competitive games, it certainly did deliver a lot of statements: Statements about the strengths of the Falcons, Packers, Broncos, Texans, Cowboys and 49ers, and statements about the weaknesses of the Giants, Bears, Ravens, Colts, Steelers and Patriots.

But the thing about statements made in the NFL in December is that they often don?t hold up in January. And I?m not so sure that the teams that made statements on Sunday are going to be the teams that continue to make statements in the playoffs. So let me go through a few of the statements that were made on Sunday, and explain which ones are true and which ones are false.

1. The Falcons are the best team in the NFC. FALSE: Yes, the Falcons can make the statement that they?re the best team in the conference, both on the strength of their 34-0 win over the Giants and on their status as the team with the best record in the NFC. But the Falcons don?t play that well consistently ? let?s not forget that a week earlier, they lost by 10 to a bad Carolina team. I?d pick either the Packers or the 49ers to win at Atlanta in January.

2. The Giants are in danger. TRUE: The flip side of the Falcons? blowout over the Giants is that it really did expose some serious problems with the Giants, namely that Eli Manning has been painfully inconsistent, and that injuries in the secondary have done major damage to the defense. Early in the season it looked like the NFC East would belong to the Giants, but now it?s a three-team race, and the Redskins and Cowboys actually appear to be in better shape. The good news for the Giants is that they?ll make the playoffs if they win their final two. The bad news is that the way they played on Sunday, I don?t have a lot of confidence that they?ll win their final two.

3. The Bears are in free fall and will miss the playoffs. FALSE: It?s easy to see why Bears fans are panicking, having lost five of their last six games. But Chicago?s schedule is about to get a lot easier, with trips to Arizona and Detroit. I see the Bears winning both games, finishing 10-6, and sneaking into the playoffs.

4. The road to the Super Bowl in the AFC goes through Houston. TRUE: After the Texans? disastrous loss in New England on Monday night, it would have been easy to disregard the Texans as legitimate title contenders. But the Texans clinched the AFC South with Sunday?s win over the Colts, and they?re now a win away from clinching home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. I think they?ll get that win against the Vikings on Sunday and ensure that if they rematch the Patriots, it will be in Houston.

5. The Broncos are the best team Peyton Manning has ever played on. TRUE: Does it sound premature to say that this year?s Broncos are better than Manning?s Super Bowl-winning 2006 team in Indianapolis? Maybe. But that team ? like many of Manning?s teams in Indianapolis ? had major holes on both defense and special teams that the Manning-led offense had to overcome. This Broncos team is winning every bit as much because of its defense as because of the Manning-led offense. If we could stuff these 2012 Broncos into a DeLorean and send them back in time to play any of Manning?s Indianapolis playoff teams, I?d pick these Broncos to win.

6. The Steelers blew it in overtime in Dallas and blew their postseason hopes. FALSE: The Steelers? final two games are both at home, against the Bengals and the Browns, and if they win both they?re in the playoffs. I think Pittsburgh is going to do it.

7. New England?s Super Bowl hopes were dealt a big blow on Sunday night. FALSE: The Patriots? loss to the 49ers probably means they?ll have to host a wild card team in the first playoff weekend, then win a couple of road games after that to get to the Super Bowl. But you know what? As much as I like the Broncos and Texans, I like the Patriots? chances of winning at Denver and at Houston in back-to-back weeks. New England is still a formidable Super Bowl contender.

That?s where I stand on the statements NFL teams made on Sunday. And now here are my statements about the rest of Sunday?s action:

Adrian Peterson is making Eric Dickerson nervous. After his 212-yard effort on Sunday, Peterson needs to total 293 yards over the final two games of the season to break Dickerson?s NFL record of 2,105 rushing yards in a season. Gaining 293 yards in two weeks isn?t easy, but it?s certainly doable for Peterson, considering that he has 366 in the last two games. In the last eight games, Peterson has rushed for 1,313 yards, a stunning yardage total that no NFL player has ever matched over an eight-game stretch of a season.

Calvin Johnson is making Jerry Rice nervous. After his 121-yard effort on Sunday, Johnson needs to total 181 yards over the final two games of the season to break Rice?s NFL record of 1,848 receiving yards in a season. Johnson tied an NFL record with his seventh consecutive 100-yard game on Sunday, so totaling 181 yards over the next two games shouldn?t be a problem. Johnson also became the first player in NFL history to gain 1,600 receiving yards in back-to-back seasons. Unfortunately for Johnson (and unlike Peterson), he?s threatening an NFL record while playing meaningless games for a bad team.

What?s JaMarcus Russell up to these days? I ask because the Raiders chose Russell first overall in the 2007 NFL draft, leaving Johnson available for the Lions to draft second overall, and Peterson available for the Vikings to draft seventh overall. Sorry to have to bring that one up, Raiders fans.

Trent Richardson?s first touchdown run was a thing of beauty. If you love good, old-fashioned, hard-nosed football, it doesn?t get much better than Richardson taking a handoff up the middle at the six-yard line, plunging into the middle and getting stacked up just as he crossed the line of scrimmage, and then simply refusing to go down as he drove forward, churning his legs and getting help from his entire offensive line while the entire Redskins? defensive line was trying to stop him, and finally falling forward through that massive rugby scrum and into the end zone. As a rookie Richardson hasn?t been the big-play runner the Browns were hoping they?d get when they traded up to take him with the third overall pick in the draft, but he might be the toughest runner to tackle in the league.

Randall Cobb is better than you realize. Cobb had an unreal leaping catch along the sideline in the second quarter in Chicago, picking up 31 yards on third-and-six and somehow getting both feet down in bounds despite taking a hard hit just as he was grabbing the ball. Cobb has been an excellent player for the Packers since arriving last season as a second-round draft pick, but I don?t know if most fans realize just how excellent. Cobb has 2,241 combined rushing, receiving and return yards this season, and 3,857 all-purpose yards so far in his NFL career. That?s an incredible career total for a guy who?s only 22 years old.

The Seahawks are stunning. After beating the Cardinals 58-0 last week, the Seahawks beat the Bills 50-17 this week. The last NFL team to score 50 or more points in back-to-back weeks was the 1950 New York Giants, who beat the Chicago Cardinals 51-21 and then beat the Baltimore Colts 55-20 a week later. (A note of caution for Seahawks fans: Those 1950 Giants were held to just three points in a postseason loss that year.)

I guess Cam Cameron wasn?t the only problem with the Ravens? offense. The Ravens fired Cameron as their offensive coordinator last week. So how did the offense in Baltimore do in the first game without him? Badly: The Ravens had six three-and-outs, the most of any team in the NFL all season, as they lost 34-17. On Statement Sunday, the Ravens made a statement that they?re not contenders in the AFC, and Cameron made a major statement in his absence: Don?t blame me.

Illinois Democrats leave primary open for Jackson's House seat

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Democratic ward bosses from Chicago and its suburbs failed on Saturday to endorse a candidate to succeed former U.S. Representative Jesse Jackson Jr., creating an open primary in February for the vacant Illinois congressional seat.

None of the more than one dozen candidates received enough support from party leaders in the 2nd Congressional District at a meeting on Saturday for the endorsement, which would have given then an edge over others in a potentially crowded field.

Jackson, the son of civil rights leader and former presidential candidate Reverend Jesse Jackson, resigned in November after 17 years in Congress amid a federal ethics probe and concerns over his mental health.

Veteran political observers had said ahead of the meeting that no one had locked up the endorsement, which if delivered could have made a candidate a front-runner, but not guaranteed victor, in the crowded primary fight to replace Jackson.

The district has 428,000 registered voters in Cook, Kankakee and Will counties. Whoever wins the February 26 Democratic primary is almost certain to win the April 9 special general election in the solidly Democratic district.

It remains unclear how many Democrats will run in the primary to replace Jackson. Filing for the race will be open in early January.

The expected candidates include former U.S. Representative Debbie Halvorson, who lost to Jackson in the Democratic primary this year, and Chicago Alderman Anthony Beale.

Jesse Jackson Jr.'s wife, Chicago Alderman Sandi Jackson, has said she would not seek to succeed him.

POLITICAL CLOUT

"Congressional seats in the Chicago area don't come open that often," said Chris Mooney, a political scientist at the University of Illinois, Springfield.

"People get in and they stay in. So when one comes up, there are a lot of people who want to get in there," Mooney said.

The last Chicago-area congressional vacancy was in 2009, when Rahm Emanuel left the House to become President Barack Obama's chief of staff.

Critics of the slating process said it tends to anoint candidates based on their political clout more than their merit.

Dick Simpson, a former Chicago alderman and now head of the political science department at the University of Illinois, Chicago, called the field of candidates "a pretty reasonable crop in terms of position and background."

They include one candidate with a troubled past, former congressman Mel Reynolds, and another with an uncertain future, state Senator Donne Trotter.

Trotter was arrested in December at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago after he tried to bring a handgun and ammunition onto an airplane - a felony.

Reynolds, who was forced to resign in 1995 after he was convicted of sexual assault and other charges, is running under the slogan, "Redemption."

Chinese probe snaps close-ups of an asteroid

SASTIND via Weibo / UMSF

China's Chang'e-2 probe took multiple images of the asteroid Toutatis during its Dec. 13 flyby.

By Alan Boyle

China's official news agency is reporting that the country's Chang'e 2 deep-space probe made an amazing flyby of the asteroid Toutatis this week, snapping a series of pictures as it passed just 2 miles away. The achievement signals China's entry into yet another exclusive space club.

Only four of the world's space efforts have managed close encounters with asteroids: NASA (with NEAR Shoemaker and Dawn, for example), the European Space Agency (with Rosetta), Japan (with Hayabusa) ??and now China with Toutatis.

The official Xinhua news agency quoted officials at the?State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, or SASTIND, as saying that Chang'e 2 buzzed past the 3-mile-long (5-kilometer-long) asteroid at a relative speed of 24,000 mph (10.73 kilometers per second).

Chang'e 2 was launched in 2010?primarily to serve as a lunar orbiter, but after a successful mission at the moon, the $132 million spacecraft was repurposed as a deep-space explorer.?The encounter with Toutatis had been planned for months, but Chinese media kept mum about the results until Saturday.

Aficionados of planetary science hailed China's success.

"Oh my goodness, did they succeed. This is awesome," the Planetary Society's Emily Lakdawalla said in a blog post passing along the news. On the Unmanned Spaceflight discussion forum, Ted Stryk wrote, "Welcome to the interplanetary club, China."

Toutatis is a near-Earth object that's big enough to cause a mass extinction if it were to hit our planet?? but fortunately, it isn't projected to come all that near in the foreseeable future. This week it passed by Earth at a minimum distance of 4.3 million miles (7 million kilometers). That provided scientists with an opportunity to study the peanut-shaped space mountain at a relatively close but totally safe distance.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory conducted a series of radar observations using the Goldstone radio antenna in California, and on Friday, JPL released a grainy time-lapse video showing Toutatis' rotation.

This video, generated from Goldstone's Solar System Radar, shows the rotation of the asteroid when it was 4.3 million miles from Earth.

The insights gleaned from such observations could conceivably help scientists figure out how asteroids came into existence early in the solar system's history, how to mine asteroids for valuable resources, or how to divert asteroids that have the potential to threaten Earth.

Lakdawalla noted that the radar readings, combined with China's up-close images, made Toutatis one of the "best-studied asteroids in the solar system."?That sounds like a bold statement, considering that NASA studied the asteroid Eros with NEAR Shoemaker for more than a year, and had Dawn in orbit around the asteroid Vesta for a year as well. But the fact that Toutatis has gotten so much attention in the past week from multiple space efforts certainly suggests that scientists see "minor planets" as a major interest.

Still more asteroid encounters are on the agenda in coming years ??including Dawn's arrival at the dwarf planet Ceres in 2015, a potential sequel to Japan's Hayabusa mission, and the crewed mission that NASA wants to send to a near-Earth asteroid in the mid-2020s.

And let's not forget China. Chang'e 2 isn't finished just yet.?Xinhua quoted sources as saying that the probe "is continuing its deep space travel and will reach a distance of more than 10 million kilometers away from Earth in January next year."

NASA Prepares Probes For Suicide Mission

Press2ToContinue writes "According to a NASA news release, 'Twin lunar-orbiting NASA spacecraft that have allowed scientists to learn more about the internal structure and composition of the moon are being prepared for their controlled descent and impact on a mountain near the moon's north pole at about 2:28 p.m. PST (5:28 p.m. EST) Monday, Dec. 17. Ebb and Flow, the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission probes, are being sent purposely into the lunar surface because their low orbit and low fuel levels preclude further scientific operations. The duo's successful prime and extended science missions generated the highest resolution gravity field map of any celestial body. The map will provide a better understanding of how Earth and other rocky planets in the solar system formed and evolved. Both spacecraft will hit the surface at 3,760 mph (1.7 kilometers per second). No imagery of the impact is expected because the region will be in shadow at the time.' That's too bad; observing the impacts could provide valuable feedback. For example, a spectrographic analysis of the impact dust cloud could reveal additional density and compositional element information for the lunar polar surfaces." Emily Lakdawalla at the Planetary Society has more information about the violent end to GRAIL's mission. If the probes were going to hit the surface of the Moon vertically, they would probably leave a crater about 3 or 4 meters in diameter. However, they are actually coming in at a very slight angle: 1.5 degrees from the horizontal, though the mountain itself has a 20-degree slope. Despite the darkness at the impact site, NASA will attempt to monitor the crashes using the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Kazakhstan to introduce mayoral elections in 2013

ALMATY, Kazakhstan (AP) ? The president of Kazakhstan said Friday he plans to introduce direct elections for town and village mayors in an effort to foster democratic standards in the authoritarian Central Asian nation.

In a wide-ranging address, President Nursultan Nazarbayev said more than 2,500 municipal heads ? about 90 percent of local governor posts ? would be elected starting from next year. No local governors are currently elected.

Nazarbayev said Kazakhstan would seek to pursue further democratization and strengthen the power of the parliament. He gave no indication that he plans to step aside.

Kazakhstan, a vast oil-rich nation of 17 million bordering China and Russia, has come under sustained criticism for limiting media freedoms and making slow progress in political reforms. The president insisted, however, that his country would not be rushed into reforms before the economic conditions were right.

"Every step of our political reforms is closely tied to our level of economic development," he said.

The bulk of Friday's speech was aimed at cataloging achievements in the ex-Soviet nation over the 72-year old leader's two decades in power and setting out the nation's strategy until 2050.

Nazarbayev said Kazakhstan has to date attracted $160 billion in foreign investment. Much of that has gone toward developing the country's abundant energy and mineral resources.

In what may prove a controversial announcement, Nazarbayev said the Latin alphabet would be adopted by 2025 in place of the Russian-style Cyrillic alphabet currently in use. By the same year, 95 percent of Kazakhstan's citizens should have learned to speak in Kazakh, he said.

Although Kazakh is the official state language, many people speak Russian instead.

Most Popular Diets from Google Zeitgeist 2012 - Shape Magazine

The year is coming to a close, which only means one thing: The Google Zeitgeist 2012 results are in! What we are most interested in, of course, are the most popular diets of the year. The top ten, listed below, differ a lot by type, but most have a celebrity face associated with them. The most popular, though, left us stumped. Why would anyone think eating 12,000 calories a day was a good idea? Let's take a gander:

10. Marisa Miller Diet
Why it was so popular: Because she eats in the nude or maybe the fact that she's a gorgeous pregnant supermodel?
With a body fit enough to be a Victoria's Secret and a Sports Illustrated model, it's no wonder we are itching to know what her diet looks like. Especially since the now-pregnant model recently posed for Allure magazine, and, of course, looks incredible. Perhaps it's these photos or her confession to Women's Health magazine this year that eating in the nude is one of her stay-gorgeous tactics? Whatever it is, it's working. Check the seven daily habits she does to stay looking so smokin' and then try the Marisa Miller abs workout that she shared with us!

9. Juicing Diet
Why it was so popular: Pre-made juice cleanses took off in popularity this year, as many celebs gave it the thumbs up
Controversial for its effectiveness (in fact, juicing might even lead to weight gain!), juicing has become ever more trendy this year, as celebrities (like all of these) jumped on the detox and bottled juice cleansing bandwagon. Even companies used the trend as a bonding tactic, as reported in this unforgettable New York Times piece from July. Lasting weight loss? Debatable. Cleanse your body? Perhaps.

8. Feeding Tube Diet
Why it was so popular: Extreme...and introduced to the U.S. this year
Just the sound of it makes us quiver (and kind of want to vom?ironic?). Said to help you shed 20 pounds in 10 days, it's become a fad of many brides looking to slim down quickly for the big day. A feeding tube is put into the nose and a constant slow drip of protein and fat, adding up to 800 calories a day, is pumped into the stomach. However, David Katz, M.D., obesity specialist from Yale University, said in an interview with ABC News, "There isn't even the hope that this would produce a lasting benefit."

RELATED: Looking for diets that will work, not just make you trendy? Go with one of these 10 best diets for many types of eaters.

7. NV Diet Pill
Why it was so popular: A Hollywood craze, with celebrities Holly Madison and Carmen Electra talking it up
Madison supposedly lost a pant size in two weeks on these, and Electra is also a spokesperson for the brand. These pills contain hoodia gordonii, extracted from a plant of the same name, which is an appetite suppressant, and green tea extract, which has fat-burning qualities. But no studies have been conducted with the pills to prove their effects.

6. Miranda Kerr Diet
Why it was so popular: This Victoria's Secret beauty also earned the title of "Sexiest Woman Alive" from Esquire UK this year
She looked amazing at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show earlier this month and now graces the December cover of Esquire UK as 2012's "Sexiest Woman Alive." How does she do it? She revealed to Harper's Bazaar in September that her family taught her the 80/20 rule, which means she focuses on healthy foods and being good 80 percent of the time, while allowing her to indulge 20 percent of the time. We like it. Bonus: See what the supermodel does to make herself feel sexiest.

5. Adriana Lima Diet
Why it was so popular: Her body debut at the VS Fashion Show after giving birth eight weeks before
On December 4, VS model Lima strutted her stuff down the runway and wowed audiences a mere two months after having daugher Sienna. We had a chance to get the exact details on just how she did it: Two- to three-hour gym sessions twice a day for five weeks is just the beginning. Read all about it here. But it definitely wasn't easy. She told CBS that her weight loss after baby was the "biggest challenge of [her] life."

RELATED: We went backstage at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2012 to ask the angels what they eat to get ready for the big show. Watch the exclusive video here!

4. P.I.N.K. Method Diet
Why it was so popular: Dr. Phil featured it on his show last year
Short for Power, Intensity, Nutrition, and Kardio, the ever-popular diet (it was one of the most searched on Yahoo! last year too) is rooted in healthy eating plans and high-intensity workouts. It may just deserve the publicity: Since when did healthy eating and challenging workouts not work?

3. Raspberry Ketone Diet
Why it was so popular: Dr. Mehmet Oz shot this into stardom on his show
Dr. Oz proclaimed raspberry ketones the "number-one miracle in a bottle for burning your fat" on his show after an animal study conducted in Japan found that the pills had flab-melting effects. See Dr. Oz talk about it here.

2. Beyond Diet
Why it was so popular: New this year, it emphasizes quality over quantity of food
Nutritionist Isabel De Los Rios co-founded the diet, which focuses on gluten-free foods that have a low glycemic index, meaning that don't cause a spike in glucose levels. Dieters are not supposed to count calories but change their focus to the certain types of foods they're eating and consume the foods that make their own bodies burn fat. The online community is a staple for this diet, which is recommended for effective for weight loss.

1. The Michael Phelps Diet
Why it was so popular: The 2012 Summer Olympics
Let's be clear: We hope no one was interested in Michael's diet for weight-loss purposes. In 2008, The New York Post reported that the Olympic athlete eats a mind-blowing 12,000 calories a day. Stop. Let that soak in for a second. But it did make sense that during the summer Olympics people were wondering how he feeds his six-pack abs. (Who wouldn't want his sexy physique?) Even though Men's Health reported that he's shaped up the quality of his calories, he still eats way more than the average male of his size. What everyone can take away from this? Do not eat like Michael Phelps unless you are?you guessed it, Michael Phelps.

Cheating Stories: Why I Cheated On My Husband

By Marina Pearson for YourTango.com

"How could you have done this to me, to us? Who are you and who did I marry?" With tears in his eyes, my ex-husband shouted and screamed these questions at me on the day he found out that I'd had an affair. All the while, I stood their shaking, in shock, not knowing what to say that would make what I had done right. I was a cheater.

Looking back, I realize that nothing in that moment would have given him the solace and comfort that he was looking for -- or that I was looking for. His care and love had been transformed into disdain and hate for the monster I had become to him.

The question that came up repeatedly after our marriage dissolved was "Why?" Why did I cheat on him? Why would I do such a thing to a man who was caring, funny and generous? It wasn't like he beat me up or anything like that.

If you are reading this and judging me, you are within your rights. No one judged me more harshly than I did, and even now, although it all turned out for the best, I wouldn't go down that road again -- even though I can completely understand why any women would.

According to the UK Adultery Survey 2012 by undercoverlovers.com, cheating women are more likely to stray as they are seeking emotional fulfillment, an improvement to their self-esteem and romance. When women cheat will depend on how fulfilled they feel in their marriages. But according to the survey, wives who cheat will do so five years into their marriages whereas men will do so seven years in.

After much soul-searching, I finally got to understand what drove me to cheat and why I had stepped into the shoes of cheating women:

1. My mindset. I was still living with the illusive notion that happiness was something that I could acquire from an external source; I bought into a fantasy. It's a fantasy that I see a lot of my clients buy into, which is that there is a fairy tale man that exists to bring happiness to them. This is just not true.

Back then, I bought into the notion that because I wasn't happy, someone else could dish happiness up on a silver platter. As my ex husband was not able to, someone else could surely, right? This of course wasn't true and to this day, it still isn't. In fact, the whole ordeal stressed me out and exposed me to more confusion and unhappiness.

Lesson learned: Being part of the cheating women club, I understand now that running away from myself was not the answer and that I am responsible for my own happiness and fulfillment. My happiness is, under no circumstances, anybody else?s responsibility -- least of all whoever I am in a relationship with.

2. The guilt factor. I honestly believed I was a bad person for thinking that I no longer fancied my ex husband, so as not to hurt him, I kept quiet. I couldn't find the words to tell him that I no longer found him sexually attractive. I was scared that he would finally find out that I was that "bad person" I judged myself to be. Instead of being able to confront him with my feelings and thoughts that "only bad people" have, I engaged in "bad person" behavior, hoping he wouldn't find out. I believed that I was not worthy of someone loving me as much as my ex husband did.

Lesson learned: What I now realize is that our beliefs about how we see ourselves can lead us to do some crazy things. Belief systems can be powerful catalysts for behavior, and sheds some light on why women cheat. By working on myself, I was able to finally overcome this pattern and now find myself in a loving relationship.

3. Lack of maturity and knowledge. Looking back, I realize now that I didn't have the maturity or the tools needed to live with the problems that my ex-husband and I had at the time. We would argue, get upset and as a result, our communication broke down and so did our intimacy. I didn't know how to manage the dynamic nor manage my thoughts about them either. Any time we argued, I honestly believed that he didn't love me. So, I acted out to get my own back.

Lesson learned: It's important to keep the communication channels open because once you sense that they aren't, intimacy can easily slide away. Before you know it, you are yearning for intimacy deeply. I have often heard that wives who cheat did so because of this communication break down. It's important to learn about relationships with courses or even coaching.

4. The passion died. At the time, I remember feeling that the passion had died in our relationship. I wanted to feel that my ex husband longed for me, that he wanted me and that he wanted to woo me. Our relationship fell into a day-to-day routine, lacking excitement and passion. I wanted to break free from this and thought that the best way was to do it through a selfish act.

Lesson learned: I now realize that passion outside of the relationship was only ever going to be short lived, which in this case it was. Working on what we had -- which was a lot -- would have probably been the best option.

All of these reasons may sound like excuses, and you know what? Cheating was a selfish act. I will be the first to admit it. I could have chosen not to do what I did, but if I put myself in the shoes of that young girl, at that time, I really felt that cheating was the solution.

If you are a woman who is contemplating cheating or a woman who has cheated, I ask you to contemplate what it is that is bringing on these feelings and what provoked you to act on them.

I have read a lot about cheating and many articles attribute infidelity to women not being happy in their relationships. However, you need to know that happiness comes from within. You cannot leave that up to anyone else. I don't regret what I did; as a result of the divorce, my ex gave me the biggest gift of all -- I finally got to find my happiness from within.

tulsidas toenail: jugindarsharma8: Shopping and Product Reviews

The popularity of online shopping has been seen by many as a threat to the existence of traditional shopping. Their argument is based on the recent widespread closure of established brands like Sears and Best Buy. But can we really say that traditional shopping is dying?

In 2011, even though the U.S economy was sluggish, shopping grew by 15% over the previous year. In addition, about 35% of Americans now have smartphones which enable them to purchase goods and services over the internet and this figure is expected to rise significantly in subsequent years. In actual fact, about half of smartphone users have used their phones for one purchase or the other. On Christmas day of 2011 alone, about 6.8 million iOs and Android smartphones were activated. Top internet retailer, Amazon, recorded a whooping net sale of $48.08 billion in 2011 which represents 40.6% increase over $32.20 billion recorded in 2010. This figure is expected to rise in 2012 and subsequent years. What then is the implication of all these to physical retailing?

Since many people now decide to shop over the internet due to the benefits derivable in doing so like convenience, easy access to market, price comparison, avoidance of crowd, better prices and so on, can we really say that that the traditional way of shopping is being threatened? In my own opinion, technology will enhance the traditional method and not kill it. The popularity of video cassette recorder (VCR) in the 80?s was seen by many as a threat to movie theaters then, but today, the film industry has been strengthened by the new technology and the demand for films has increased.

Moreover, when the email became very popular, a lot people thought that the traditional postal service would die, but today, it is waxing stronger. The point I?m driving at here is that, if traditional shop owners can embrace new technology, shopping on the internet would not be a threat to them but a blessing.

If physical retailers can monitor shopping behavior through the use of Wi-Fi signals from smartphones, they would be able to compete favorably in a fast-changing world. They can use technology to measure loyalty, make better staffing decisions, improve store layouts, reduce wait times in checkout lines and so on. Online shopping has come to stay but it is not a threat to traditional shopping because many consumers still value some of its features like quality of customer service, the experience of trying and buying products, how products are displayed and so on.

HPV in older women may be due to reactivation of virus, not new infection

HPV in older women may be due to reactivation of virus, not new infection [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 13-Dec-2012

[EMBARGOED FOR DEC. 13, 2012] A new study suggests that human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in women at or after menopause may represent an infection acquired years ago, and that HPV infections may exist below limits of detection after one to two years, similar to other viruses, such as varicella zoster, which can cause shingles. The study, published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases and available online, highlights the need for additional research to better understand HPV infections and the role of HPV persistence and reactivation, particularly in women of the baby boomer generation.

In previous studies, HPV has been detected in 25 to 50 percent of young, sexually active women. In most of these cases, after two years the virus is "cleared," or is no longer detected in samples. Studies have shown that HPV infection peaks in young women around the age of sexual debut and begins to decline in the late 20s and 30s. In some countries, such as in Central and South America, HPV has been shown to have a second peak around the age of menopause. In contrast, in previous studies in the United States and Europe, HPV prevalence remains low or continues to decline with age.

Researchers, led by Patti E. Gravitt, PhD, of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine in Serdang, Malaysia, set out to investigate what factors influence these differences. They compared differences in recent and lifetime sexual behaviors by age groups to investigate the presence of a cohort effect in a population of women in Baltimore.

The study included approximately 850 women aged 35-60 who were receiving routine cervical cancer screening from 2008 to 2011. While HPV prevalence was higher among women who reported a new sexual partner within 6 months prior to study enrollment, less than 3 percent of women in the study reported having a new partner in that time. Conversely, nearly 90 percent of HPV infections were detected in women reporting more than one lifetime sexual partner, and 77 percent were detected in women who reported five or more sexual partners in their lifetime.

"Taken together, our data raise the possibility that reactivation risk may increase around age 50 years and contribute to a larger fraction of HPV detection at older ages, compared with new acquisition," the researchers wrote.

According to the authors, an important point this study makes is that women who had their sexual debut during and after the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s have a significantly higher risk of HPV infection compared to women who did so before 1965, likely due to a higher number of sexual partners during their lifetime. "Our historical experience with HPV and cervical neoplasia in postmenopausal women may not be very predictive of the experience of the baby boomer generation of women who are now entering the menopausal transition at a higher risk than their mothers," Dr. Gravitt said.

In an accompanying editorial, Darron R. Brown, MD, and Bree A. Weaver, MD, of the Indiana University School of Medicine, noted that some previous studies demonstrating that HPV "clears" after two years have been based on only one or two negative screenings. Several studies have shown that type-specific HPV can be detected again after a long period of non-detection, although whether this is due to reactivation of a low-level persistent infection or a new infection has not been established. "Further research is needed to help better understand the natural history of HPV infection in older women and to understand the importance of HPV persistence and reactivation in all women," they wrote.

Dr. Gravitt and her team of investigators will continue to follow the women in the study to further confirm their findings. A more nationally representative sample of women would help determine whether the study's findings can be generalized to the larger U.S. population. "Long-term follow-up of previously highly exposed women who will transition through menopause in the next decade is urgently needed to accurately estimate the potential risk of postmenopausal invasive cervical cancer in the U.S. baby boom population and guide prevention strategies," the authors wrote.

###

Fast Facts:

1) Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been detected in 25 to 50 percent of young, sexually active women.

2) Researchers studied approximately 850 women aged 35-60 who were receiving routine cervical cancer screening in Baltimore from 2008 to 2011. Nearly 90 percent of HPV infections were detected in women reporting more than one lifetime sexual partner.

3) While HPV prevalence was higher among women who reported a new sexual partner within 6 months prior to study enrollment, less than 3 percent of women reported having a new partner.

4) The findings suggest that women who are found to have HPV around the age of 50 may have acquired the virus years before.

Founded in 1904, The Journal of Infectious Diseases is the premier publication in the Western Hemisphere for original research on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diseases; on the microbes that cause them; and on disorders of host immune mechanisms. Articles in JID include research results from microbiology, immunology, epidemiology, and related disciplines. It is published under the auspices of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).
