(AP) ? Twin suicide car bombs ripped through a Damascus suburb minutes apart on Wednesday, killing at least 34 people, state media said, and rebels claimed they shot down a Syrian air force fighter jet.

The state news agency, SANA, said suicide bombers detonated two cars packed with explosives early in the morning in the eastern suburb of Jaramana, a Christian and Druse area known as mostly loyal to President Bashar Assad.

Suicide bombings have struck regime targets in Damascus and elsewhere since last December. Such attacks are a trademark of radical Muslim groups fighting alongside other rebels units, raising concerns of growing influence of Islamic extremists among the forces seeking to topple the regime.

Wednesday's bombs were detonated in a parking lot near a cluster of commercial buildings as groups of laborers and employees were arriving for work, killing 34 and injuring 83 people, SANA said.

The blasts shattered windows, littering the street with glass and debris. Human remains were scattered on the pavement in pools of blood. Six commercial buildings were damaged in the attacks, and dozens of cars were destroyed, SANA said.

After the first explosion, people rushed to help the injured, and then the second bomb went off, said Ismail Zlaiaa, 54, who lives in the neighborhood.

"It is an area packed with rush-hour passengers," he said. "God will not forgive the criminal perpetrators."

Ibtissam Nseir, a 45-year-old teacher, said the bombs exploded minutes before she set off for work. She said there were no troops around the district and wondered why the attackers would target it. Nseir blamed rebels.

"Is this the freedom which they want? Syria is a secure country and it will remain so," she said.

There were conflicting reports about the death toll. Two hospital officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters, said at least 30 bodies were brought to two hospitals. The Britain-based Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on reports from the ground, said 29 people were killed.

The different tolls could not immediately be reconciled. The regime restricts independent media coverage.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Wednesday's bombings.

Opposition fighters are predominantly members of the Sunni Muslim majority. In their push to take Damascus, they have frequently targeted state institutions and troops. They have also often hit districts around the capital with the country's minority communities, perceived to be allied with Assad's Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Downtown Damascus ? the seat of Assad's power ? has been the scene of scores of car bombs and mortar attacks targeting state security institutions and troops, areas with homes of wealthy Syrians, army officers, security officials and other members of the regime.

In May, two suicide car bombers blew themselves up outside a military intelligence building in Damascus, killing at least 55 people. In July, a bomb hit a building in which Cabinet ministers and senior security officials were meeting, killing the defense minister and his deputy, who was Assad's brother-in-law. A former defense minister also died in the attack.

Fighting between rebels and government troops raged on in several parts of the country on Wednesday. Regime warplanes struck rebel-held areas in the northern Idlib province and Damascus suburbs.

In northern Syria, a rebel group claimed it brought down a Syrian MiG-23 fighter plane near the rebel-held town of Daret Azzeh, according to a report by Turkey's state-run Anadolu news agency. The report quoted unnamed rebels in the area and said the jet was shot down Wednesday, most likely by a missile.

There was no immediate independent confirmation.

Opposition fighters claim they have shot down helicopters and warplanes in the past, although the rebels repeatedly complain their arsenal is no match for the regime's fighter jets and attack helicopters.

In recent weeks rebels have captured several air bases with anti-aircraft weapons, but it is not known if they have the ability to operate them.

Since the summer, the Syrian military has significantly increased its use of air power in efforts to roll back the rebels' territorial gains, particularly in the northeast, along the border with Turkey.

Syria's conflict started 20 months ago as an uprising against Assad, whose family has ruled the country for four decades. It quickly morphed into a civil war, with rebels taking up arms to fight back against a bloody crackdown by the government. According to activists, at least 40,000 people have been killed since March 2011.

Assad blames the revolt on a conspiracy to destroy Syria, saying the uprising is being driven by foreign "terrorists" ? a term the authorities use for the rebels ? and not Syrians seeking change.

Analysts say most of those fighting Assad's regime are ordinary Syrians and soldiers who have defected. But increasingly, fighters adhering to an extremist Islamist ideology are turning up on the front lines. The rebels try to play down the Islamists' influence for fear of alienating Western support.

McDonald's sales drop for first time since 2003 | Business ...

NEW YORK ?

McDonald's Corp. is having trouble stomaching the competition.

The world's biggest hamburger chain said Thursday that a key sales figure fell for the first time in nearly a decade in October, as it faced the double whammy of a challenging economy abroad and intensifying competition at home. The company, based in Oak Brook, Ill., says global revenue at restaurants open at least 13 months fell 1.8 percent for the month. The last time it dropped was in March 2003.

The figure is a key metric because it strips out the impact of newly opened and closed locations. It's a snapshot of money spent on food at both company-owned and franchised restaurants and does not reflect corporate revenue.

McDonald's says the figure fell 2.2 percent in both the U.S. and Europe in October. In the region encompassing Asia, the Middle East and Africa, it dropped 2.4 percent. CEO Don Thompson cited the "pervasive challenges of today's global marketplace" for the declines.

After years of outperforming its rivals, McDonald's has seen sales slow recently, with longtime rivals such as Burger King and Wendy's working to revive their brands with improved menus and new TV ad campaigns. Taco Bell, owned by Yum Brands Inc., is also enjoying growth with the help of new offerings such as it Doritos Locos Tacos and higher-end Cantina Bell bowls and burritos.

Additionally, people are increasingly flocking to restaurants such as Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. and Panera Bread Co., which offer better-quality food for a little more money. The broader fast-food landscape has been undergoing changes over the past several years, with the rise of chains such as Subway and Starbucks.

On Thursday, McDonald's said it would remain focused on underscoring its value message.

In the U.S., for example, the company is returning its focus on the Dollar Menu, which was introduced about a decade ago. The move comes after an attempt to shift customers to an "Extra Value Menu," which charges slightly higher prices, fell flat.

The Extra Value Menu was intended to give McDonald's more flexibility with profit margins. With the Dollar Menu, the company has had to swap out many items over the years as costs for ingredients have climbed. For example, the Dollar Menu was first introduced with the flagship offering of the Big `N Tasty, made with a quarter-pound beef patty. Earlier this year, McDonald's even took its small fries off the Dollar Menu.

In October, McDonald's said that the impact of Dollar Menu advertising in the U.S. was offset by "modest consumer demand" and heightened competition. Moving forward, the company said it would continue its everyday value marketing.

The same was true for Europe, where McDonald's gets 40 percent of its business. Amid the region's ongoing economic uncertainty, McDonald's said it would offer new meal combinations at various price ranges and continue remodeling restaurants. The company said positive results in the United Kingdom were offset by declines across many other regions.

In the Asia, the company said it plans to differentiate itself with menu offerings tailored to local tastes.

McDonald's shares were down 61 cents at $86.23 in premarket trading. The company, which has more than 34,000 locations worldwide, had warned last month that sales were trending negative for the month.

Successful Sales Management: Case Study Developing A Sales ...

Sometimes the effort developing a sales strategy comes to nothing, because it proves there isn't a business opportunity. ?That seems bad news for the entrepreneur. ?The exciting idea really doesn't seem too interesting anymore. ?On the other hand its great news. If it avoids all the costs, losses and disappointments of a failed startup, that's a bullet dodged. The owner survives to start something with a better chance of success.

We have our own case study, which illustrates how the exercise of defining a sales strategy uncovers a lot of risk factors which might not otherwise come to light, until its too late.

We've recently been involved in a new venture - a consortium with external funding to develop an electromechanical device for diagnosing Parkinsons Disease. ?We ?had an opportunity to be the exclusive distributor. ?At first glance this seemed a licence to print money, but once we'd done the hard yards researching, and validating, and planning, it didn't appeal so much. ?Our failure to find a plausible sales strategy stopped us in our tracks, and saved us a great deal of money and time and effort in the process. Just how we go about developing a sales strategy is explained in Reengineering Sales Management. ?There's even a template people can use to get themselves started. ?But here we'll summarise the theory, to save time and get on with the story.

First the market background.

The global market for medical devices is eye wateringly profitable, and growing like crazy. As populations age, the number of neurological disease sufferers automatically expands. ?Health services can't cope with the numbers now - a situation which can only get worse. ?There's a world shortage of specialist clinicians to diagnose patients. ?High profile charities work hard at increasing awareness of the diseases. ?There's a lot of interest in Parkinsons Disease, it's sufferers and its treatment.

That sounds like fertile territory for an ambitious sales organisation. ?Now we know something of the market, lets figure out how we might sell the product. ?To do that we need to define the unique value proposition, who will buy it, why they'll buy. and how they'll buy it. ?That sounds easy enough, but is it?

We've got a sort of value proposition, but need to work out a lot of other stuff before we can make it unique, and meaningful. Our first questions are who will be the customer? ?Who is going to benefit? ?Who will have the budget? Who will have the authority to sign a contract?

Here's where the problems start. ?

Who is going to benefit from use of the device to achieve a diagnosis? Perhaps the patient? Perhaps the specialist? Perhaps the hospital administrator? ?Potentially each might benefit in a peripheral way. If the clinicians can cure the problem early, they'll improve quality of life for the patient, increase the efficiency of specialist clinicians, and reduce the hospital administrators costs. ?That sounds OK. ?We might persuade patients to insist clinicians use the technology, but the patient isn't going to buy it. ?We might persuade the clinician its a useful tool to improve patient care, but she doesn't have the authority to buy it. ?We might persuade the admin people there's a business case to support the clinical case - more efficient use of scarce resource frees up assets to treat more patients - but they don't have the money to buy it. And they won't find it, unless the clinician convinces them of savings elsewhere.

This is starting to look awfully complicated. But that gets worse when we find out there is no cure for Parkinsons Disease. ?The doctors can only treat the symptoms, so the diagnosis is less relevant than it might seem. ?Who is going to spend money on equipment for diagnosis when the symptoms are the problem which can be treated, not the cause? ?

As if that isn't bad enough, we then find out most clinicians prefer to delay the only available treatment as long as possible, in some cases until 80% of the patient's normal function has been lost. ?They delay treatment because it has significant debilitating side effects, and ultimately makes the patient more sick than they would otherwise be. ?At this point our unique value proposition - early confirmation of Parkinsons Disease - might be valid, but its not interesting. ?Who cares??

To cut a long story short, we don't have a meaningful unique value proposition, we can't identify a customer, and we can't find a reason why they would buy the product if we could.

Then we get to the question of how they'll buy it, which really seals the deal as far as we're concerned.

In the medical devices business sales reps call on clinicians (who are mostly busy seeing patients) in order to persuade them to want the technology and ask the administrators to buy it for them. ?Then the rep calls on the administrator asking for the order. ?Then the administrator asks the clinician to justify the cost, which is impossible, because nothing will change as a result of the investment.

The medical devices industry is awesomely profitable, because the barriers to entry are so high. ?One of those barriers is cost of sale, because of the need for personal calls by sales rep. Another barrier is the capital required to fund regulatory approval for the product, expensive marketing and a high quality sales team. A stand alone product can't generate enough margin to cover the cost of sale. ?That means every sale is going to lose money. ?There is no business case to justify any investment in this opportunity, let alone the $20 million we figured was the minimum required.

We're sales guys, not doctors. We aren't experts in medical devices, and we have no specific knowledge of neurological diseases and treatments. ?Everything we discovered came from researching the internet, and talking to experts wherever we could. Once we developed the full picture, we shared it with consortium colleagues and asked them to correct any errors. ?They didn't.?

You'll understand why we decided to walk away from this opportunity, and save our money for more interesting ideas.

Why doesn?t the traditional approach to selling and sales management work so well any more? What can the modern sales professional do to stay relevant in today?s customer driven markets?? Check out our eBook?Reengineering Sales Management?for ideas on how to embrace the new order of customer driven buyer/seller relationships.

Disaster Planning for Freelancers | Creative Freelancer Blog

While I wasn?t directly in the path of Superstorm Sandy, it still disrupted my business because many of my best clients live and work on the east coast. Several projects were delayed for the best of reasons as clients fled the storm, had emergency shutdowns, or simply lost power and Internet access.

Tragic events like these don?t hit often, but they can seriously impact freelancers when they do. Whether or not you believe that man-made climate change is responsible (a discussion that?s beyond the scope of this article), the number of severe weather events in North America has more than quintupled in the last 30 years. Many insurance companies are taking that statistic seriously, and you should too. And while there?s no completely weather-proof way to prepare, a few simple precautions can help any freelance business react and recover faster when calamity strikes.

    Build a savings cushion
Disruption of your cash flow may not be the first thing on your mind in a disaster, but freelancers don?t get paid for downtime like many of their corporate counterparts. Your business should ideally have an emergency fund large enough to cover at least three months of operating expenses. If you don't have one, start today. Find a way to put at least $100 a month into a special account just for emergencies, set it up so that the funds are transferred automatically, then don?t touch it unless you have a legitimate crisis.

    Backup, backup, backup
Catastrophic events aren?t the only good reason to have backups of all your critical data, but they?re more than enough to justify the investment. You should have both on-site and off-site backups in place. If you?re a Mac user, Apple?s backup application is an excellent solution for your local copy. It?s free, so you have no excuse not to use it, and it works automatically in the background without the need for you to think about it.

The simplest offsite backup is a disk drive that you take with you when you leave the office, assuming that you don?t work from home. If you prefer an automatic solution, there are a number of online services to choose from, so do a bit of research to find the one that best fits your budget, the number of computers you use, and the amount of data you need to back up. The basic Carbonite plan is sufficient for my files, which are mostly text, but most designers I know need something more robust to handle larger files. Other popular services include Backblaze, CrashPlan, Mozy, and JungleDisk. Dropbox also offers some backup options. Plan well in advance if you sign up for one of these services?it can literally take weeks for your first backup to run.

If you?re willing to trust files to the cloud, file-storage services like Dropbox and Evernote are handy ways to ensure key files are available anywhere, even if you lose your computer or other gizmos.

    Got Power?
If technology is the lifeline of your business, give serious consideration to backup power and connectivity. At the very least, have a secondary power supply for at least one computer or tablet that can run critical software. It?s also a good idea to have several places in mind where you can go to get wi-fi access. If your home or office loses power, check to see if your local coffeehouse, library, or community center is still up and running.

Mobile phone service may or may not be available (Sandy knocked out cellular service in some areas), but you?ll want to have a way to keep your phone up and running. When Hurricane Ike blew 78 mph winds as far north as Cincinnati in 2008, I used a solar backpack generator to keep my mobile phone running until our power was restored. I?ve since added a crank-powered weather radio that can also charge my phone in a pinch, though it takes a while. If you?ve got a smartphone that can charge via USB, you can also power up from a battery-powered laptop.

If you still have a land line, keep an old-fashioned phone around--one that doesn?t require power from the wall to work. Phone lines don?t rely on the electric company, so they sometimes continue working even if your power is out. I?m fortunate to live in a neighborhood where the telephone wires are underground, and my vintage 1980s phone has served me well in several blackouts.

Backup generators are expensive, but if you live in an area that gets a lot of heavy weather, it might be worth the investment.

    Let?s talk about redundancy again
Having more than one way to connect to the Internet can be a real business-saver. I have a wired connection in my home office, but my smartphone can access a different company?s network. You might also consider setting up a backup email address or two with a different company than your primary ISP. Free services like Gmail are an easy way to get a second address.

Set up an early warning system
When my wife Toni realized how focused I get while working, she made me get a weather radio for my office. A good one will let you customize which alerts you get, and from where. You can get similar alerts on your smartphone using the free Weather Channel app. Look for severe weather push notifications in the settings panel--click the circle with the letter ?i? to access it.

    Be flexible
Disasters disrupt your clients, too. If they?re in recovery mode, be prepared to shift deadlines or make other accommodations. Don?t be surprised if delays are followed by the need for rush turnarounds. If you are able to offer help and support, do so. Being a low maintenance/high performance partner in the wake of a crisis can dramatically boost your value in the eyes of many clients.

Something else to be ready for is what economists call ?perverse stimulus.? While no sane person wishes tragedy on anyone, an ironic reality is that disasters often spur economic activity when recovery efforts get underway. If an event generates sudden demand for one of your clients or contacts, it could result in an unexpected assignment, often with a quick turnaround time. Don?t seek them out ghoulishly, but be prepared if an opportunity comes knocking. Donating your services may also be a possibility if you?re directly involved in disaster relief.

Have a personal disaster plan, too
I?ve focused on business-specific planning here, but having all your non-business precautions in place will help you weather the storm with a lot more peace of mind. Check out www.ready.gov for tips on what to do before, during, and after disaster strikes.

When all else fails, forget the deadline and stay safe
Deadlines are king in our business, but all bets are off when disaster is barreling toward your home office. Take cover, seek shelter, flee the zombie invasion, or do whatever else you must to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. Your clients will understand. If they don?t, get new clients.

Music review: Charlie Hunter and Scott Amendola jazz it up in ...

    Charlie Hunter

Guitar wizard Charlie Hunter and drummer Scott Amendola, who did two shows at the Dakota jazz club on Monday night, Nov. 5, are kindred spirits. Both favor unorthodox, irreverent, cliche-mashing approaches to their respective instruments.

The two have been musical collaborators for nearly 20 years. They both were members of one of the most memorable jazz groups in recent memory: the 1990s Bay Area combo T.J. Kirk, whose repertoire consisted of gleeful mashups of music by Thelonious Monk, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and James Brown.

On their current tour, Amendola and Hunter function as a two-man jam band, though without the long-winded musical verbosity often associated with that noodle-dancing genre.

Hunter plays a custom-designed seven-string guitar that allows him to play bass lines with his thumb while using his fingers to pick melodies and unconventional chord-voicings of his own design.

Their opening set at the Dakota in downtown Minneapolis consisted of several tunes from their new topically-titled album, "Not Getting Behind Is the New Getting Ahead."

Hunter's sardonically-titled tune "Assessing the Assessors, An Assessor's Assessment," started out as a blues-tinged ballad with, at one point, a loping, Jimmy Reed-like beat that morphed into some Space Age fretwork.

"Rust Belt" was a strutting funk piece with a thudding bass-and-drum line, punctuated with Hunter's jazzy single-note runs.

The equally creative Amendola often seemed to be playing

complementary counter melodies on his drums and cymbals.

At times, his spare, spacious rhythms evoked the influential, less-is-more style of the great New Orleans funk drummer Zig Modeliste.

Rather than using the standard drummer-in-the-back, guitarist-up-front configuration, longtime musical foils Hunter and Amendola faced each other like two well-matched sparring partners. A very physical guitarist, Hunter often grimaced and growled like a theatrical pro wrestler delivering a body slam.

While Hunter has always distinguished himself as a futuristic guitar stylist, he also has a firm connection to seminal musical roots, throwing in abstract updates of early 20th-century blues grooves.

Hunter's finger-picked piece "Blind Arthur" paid tribute to one of his early ax influences, the great ragtime six-stringer Blind Blake.

His instrumental rendition of Bessie Smith's "You Been A Good Old Wagon But You Done Broke Down" featured a lopsided, thudding drum beat that did sketch the mental image of a busted wagon.

CEO Gary Swart of oDesk: Next president should focus on self ...

CEO Gary Swart of oDesk: Next president should focus on self-employed to boost economy

With the election today and the economy barely showing signs of recovery, one of the most contentious campaign topics is which presidential candidate will ?get America working again.? Both candidates are courting small businesses, but are overlooking the best?representation of a ?small business??the self-employed.

Almost one-third of the country?s workforce is self-employed, and that figure is growing fast. With a growth rate of 14.4% since 2001, according to consulting firm Economic Modeling Specialists International, the self-employed represent one of the fastest-growing segments of the country?s workforce. Currently, 16.9 million people are self-employed in the U.S., with a five-year projection of 23 million, according to advisory firm MBO Partners.

This groundswell of independent professionals is contributing almost one trillion dollars in revenue to our economy, according to the firm. And yet, these professionals largely succeed out of resilience and ingenuity, rather than through government support. In fact, they are often disadvantaged by policies and regulations, facing challenges such as:

    • Millions of dollars unpaid due to lack of legal protection:?The average freelancer was unable to collect more than $4,500 last year, and eight out of 10 have faced nonpayment in their careers, according to the Freelancers Union. Yet the self-employed do not have the same wage protections as employees, and often have no legal recourse to collect payment. This is not just a hardship for freelancers, but also for the economy?the union also found that unpaid wages totaled $2.5 million last year (just among the 2,500 respondents of their survey); if expanded to the almost 17 million independent professionals in the U.S., that suggests approximately $17 billion lost each year. As a result, ?city, state, and federal governments lose not only personal income tax, but also income that would inevitably be produced as these workers purchase more goods and services,? the report noted.
    • More than their fair share of taxes:?Once the self-employed manage to get paid, they then face double taxation since they?re considered both employees and employers. They pay not only the standard income tax but also a Self-Employment Tax of 15.3% on their net earnings, which is roughly equivalent to the combined contributions of employees and employers for Social Security and Medicare.
    • Exorbitant health insurance costs:?Perhaps the most emotionally charged of these issues is the high cost of buying health insurance as an individual. In addition to the often prohibitively high prices, the income used to purchase individual health insurance plans is taxed, whereas employees do not have the value of their employer-sponsored health insurance plans added to their taxable income.

Ensuring policy support for the self-employed has never been more important, as the driving forces behind the segment?s rapid growth are only expected to grow stronger. Advancements in Internet-based services and broadband access in particular are giving workers unprecedented flexibility in how, where and when they work, empowering more and more workers to embark on freelance careers.?We?ve?seen hours worked by independent professionals in oDesk?s online workplace increase more than?eight-fold?since 2009.

Yet a great deal of work remains to be done in order to ensure that our country?s millions of self-employed have the legal and governmental support they deserve. A number of groups, most notably the Freelancers Union and the National Association for the Self-Employed, are striving for the much-needed resources needed for the self-employed?such as access to health insurance, tax guidance and community support?as well as fighting for the rights of freelancers through legislative advocacy.

Moving forward, I urge policymakers to look closely at the issues affecting our nation?s self-employed. From issuing tax credits, to make individual health insurance more affordable, to establishing a route for legal recourse in order to protect earnings due, we need to be supporting and anticipating the importance of this segment of our workforce. In doing so, it won?t just be the self-employed that thrive?our economy will too.

Local Voices ? Simple Guide On How To Improve Your House

Is this your first time making improvements on your home? You may be wondering what kinds of improvements you should make. You are not alone - many times people who start a home improvement project feel overwhelmed. Check out these handpicked tips and tricks, which are sure to help you get started.

If you are considering home improvements that will add to your home?s value, think about improving the porch. It is the first thing any visitor would see. User a power washer to give it a good cleaning. Paint it an interesting color, add a couple of inviting chairs and lush plants. This may be surprising, but a simple coat of paint can increase your home?s value far beyond the cost of the investment. You can make a huge difference with just a little improvement.

Keep in mind that a low estimate is not necessarily a good one. When soliciting bids for home improvement tasks, thoroughly research and investigate the companies offering the bids. A lower price might seem like a good thing in the beginning, but if you pay for shoddy work, you?ll only be hurting yourself in the long run.

One great kitchen and bathroom project is the installation of ceramic tile. Consider unique and colorful designs, or a solid scheme that will complement the rest of the room with chic style. Besides making your rooms look more attractive, you can add significantly to the value of your home by putting in new ceramic tile.

Do you want an elegant upgrade to your home that doesn?t break the bank? An easy way to revitalize that boring old entryway is to install a new doorbell. This is an improvement anyone who comes to your home will notice.

You can refresh the look of your kitchen appliances without breaking the bank. Stainless steel is popular right now, but that doesn?t mean you should replace all of your appliances. Appliance paint is available in many colors and can give your appliances a whole new look. Appliance paint can update you kitchen quickly and easily.

The quotes you have gotten from contractors for home projects should be on a letterhead. A letterhead is a sign of a professional business, which has been around for a while and it means that the company is less likely to be a scam. This will give you a good indication as to if the company is worth looking into further.
    water damage restoration canton online
Look into different types of insulation when you are thinking of residing your home. Some kinds that are available could be rigid foam insulation, wall protective systems and permeable house wrap. Determine how much you will need for each one and decide how much you want to spend.

Tackling home improvement projects is something that most everyone needs to take on at least once during their life. Every home improvement project starts with some goal in mind. It can be to improve the value of your home or simply because you want to give it an updated look, no matter what there is something you can do that will give you lots of joy.

What do normal people think of new Windows 8 PCs?

Remember last month when the Home Shopping Network (HSN) accidentally began taking orders for new Windows 8 PCs?a couple weeks before they were supposed to?

The company pulled the listings down in short order. But it was clear from the selection of devices and from HSN?s marketing material and in-house videos that they were planning to make a significant push into this new market.

And now that they've recovered from that false start, HSN is pushing a very large collection of Windows 8 PCs?(at least 26, by my count).

    hsn-windows-8-store

One thing that?s fascinating about HSN is that it?s a community made up of people who are very different from the tech bloggers and gadget addicts that tend to hang around places like this.

Hipsters and techies might scoff at HSN, whose habitu?s are about as far as you can get from Silicon Valley and?Williamsburg when it comes to tech and design sophistication, but HSN shoppers buy a lot of technology. And because they?re a community, they love to leave reviews. It is no accident that every HSN listing for a Windows 8 PC has a Pinterest button alongside the Facebook Like and Tweet This buttons.

So I was particularly eager to read the first reactions to these new devices from, for lack of a better word, normal people.

I went through a total of 42 reviews for three low-priced laptops running Windows 8: one from Acer, two from Gateway (a subsidiary of Acer). All three looked like commodity machines designed to appeal to a price-conscious demographic.

I sorted the reviews into buckets, based on whether the buyer seemed to like or dislike the?device overall, with a further breakdown of comments that specifically mentioned Windows 8.

The sample size is far too small to draw any firm conclusions, but overall I found the impressions of these nontechnical early adopters to be far more positive than I would have expected?especially with less-than-top-shelf hardware.

    LOVED THE WHOLE PACKAGE: 21%

A significant subset of the reviews were unabashedly positive, using words like ?awesome? and ?great? and ?loved it? to describe their new Precious.?Presumably the operating system is part of that experience.

    LIKED WINDOWS 8: 24%

Nearly 1 in 4 reviewers made a special point to single out Windows 8 for praise. A self-described senior citizen, for example, said: ?I love this laptop, its a little challenging to get used to Windows 8 but once you do you will love it!!! Big buttons for easier typing??

Another buyer gushed, ?The setup of windows 8 is great I can see everything with [ease]. The computer itself has so many features that I have had it a week and still discovering new ones.?

A handful of these people who probably have never seen Engadget and think Gizmodo is a character on The Cartoon Network were pleasantly surprised that the new OS wasn?t as difficult to use as they had been told:

    • ?Windows 8 has a bit of a learning curve but overall, I like it.?
    • ?Great machine! Win 8 easier to learn than expected.?
    • ?I love it! It's fast, Windows 8 is rather easy to use??

JURY STILL OUT ON WINDOWS 8: 19%

As expected, some of the early adopters liked the hardware but were flummoxed by the new operating system. A sampling of comments:

    • ?Windows 8 ? this take some getting used to. The idea of getting to information faster is good however, there aren't enough programs preloaded.?
    • ?Great so far - getting used to Win 8 will take a few days!!!?
    • " trying to get use to this new windows 8?
    • ?I haven't made my mind up about Windows 8. I've sort of figured out how to use it but I find myself switching back to the desktop. It's easier for me to navigate.?

I think part of Microsoft's bet on the Windows 8 interface is that people will get over the discomfort quickly. If so, this comment has to be reassuring:

Windows 8 scares me as I'm not used to not having a "start" menu to get to my All Programs. : The more I use it, however, the more I like it and this computer is...FAST!!!

    HATED THE HARDWARE: 21%

One of the biggest problems with the PC ecosystem is that cut-rate hardware can be slow, unreliable, or poorly supported. And in this sample, about 1 in 5 buyers really, really?didn?t like the product they bought.

None of the reviews that I?sorted into this group had a bad word to say about Windows 8. In fact, a couple reviewers pointedly mentioned that they had used Windows 8 on other hardware and blamed the hardware for system sluggishness. HSN?s India-based support staff also earned brickbats in this category.

But when 20% or more of your customers are unhappy with your product within days of buying it, you, Mr. PC Maker, have a problem.

    HATED WINDOWS ?8: 14%

This number is pretty much in line with what I expected, and significantly smaller than the doom-and-gloom scenarios some Microsoft watchers are secretly hoping for.

Microsoft must have expected a certain amount of backlash from its strategy of going all in with a new interface and removing familiar touchstones like the Start menu. And sure enough, 6 of these 42 mostly non-techie reviewers made sure to point out that they didn?t like Windows 8.

One called it ?a real pain? to learn the new ways. An HSN customer who described the laptop screen as ?amazing, the best I have ever seen? went on to add, pointedly: ?Not crazy about Windows 8.?

For one buyer, the combination of Windows 8 and sluggish hardware was a dealbreaker:

It was very slow just turning it on and sometimes when you go from one app to another. Also not too thrilled with the upgrades that Windows 8 offers. Only upgrade for me was the screen size. Most likely I will be sending back unless Windows 8 grows on me - not likely

But my favorite bad review was this deliciously understated entry, which threw in a verdict on Windows 8 almost as punctuation:

Looks beautiful but after 3 days it now has a pc error. I had to reset. So no i'm not a happy consumer. ? Also i hate windows8. Thank you

    You're welcome.

This exercise, while certainly not definitive, really does zero in on the core problems that Microsoft is desperately trying to deal with in the PC ecosystem.

The first is a set of recalcitrant hardware partners who are willing to put out a product that a significant percentage of their customers are going to dismiss as "junk" or worse. We'll see if Dell, Lenovo,?and Samsung can pull better satisfaction ratings from their customers.

The second problem is Microsoft's need to help new Windows 8 users get over the learning curve. It's not entirely clear from this small sample that they've succeeded at that task yet.

And a footnote: I was fascinated that not one customer complained about the pre-loaded software, and in fact many of them saw the trial version of Norton and the bundle of 19 programs on a separate CD as selling points.

Video: Daylight saving time: Why do we 'fall back'?

    >>> many of you probably appreciated the extra hour of sleep overnight now that daylight saving time has come to an end, but for many people the whole spring ahead/fall back change the clocks thing is an annoyance that doesn't make a lot of sense. and that includes our mike taibbi .

    >> reporter: for nearly a century the whole idea of daylight saving time has been to save precious energy and resources in tough times by matching the available hours of daylight to the time when the most people were out and about. fdr even called it wartime. in peacetime falling back means waking up once a year with one extra hour for anything.

    >> sleeping, definitely sleeping.

    >> i will probably exercise, go for a run.

    >> reporter: but it turns out there's never been a clear consensus on how much energy daylight saving time actually saves and for every parent happy the kids don't have to leave for school in the dark, already others unhappy at having daylight left for early trick-or-treating. owners like jimmy have to reset their own clocks in many of their customers' digital wachls.

    >> come monday morning people will rush in to set their watches because they can't do it themselves. we'll do it for them.

    >> reporter: and then there are watch collectors like me who ever since i was a kid i've had this fascination with time and timepieces and the closest thing to a fashion choice i ever make is which one to wear. they're all analog, not one digital watch , which means from the bulova with the accutron to the tuning fork with the $10 tie mex you have to move the hands manually, and while it may seem like a waste of time, there are a lot of people like me.

    >> they're into the timepieces. to them it's not only a work of art, it's not only beauty, but it's also a regimentation and it helps them to be able to march in time with what it is that they need to do.

    >> reporter: so, except for folks in arizona and hawaii who voted to stay on standard time year round, everyone resets their clocks and watches and in the fall gets that bonus extra hour.

    >> i wish we did this every weekend.

    >> reporter: though for some of us one extra hour isn't nearly enough. for "today," mike taibbi , nbc news, los angeles .

Credit Issues Of Couples | Top Finance Blog

When two individuals tie the knot, their fiscal lives get hitched as well. You and your partner may plan to buy a home together, or you may also start putting your salaries into a joint savings account. However, your spouse?s credit score will be different from yours. You and your spouse share separate financial documents and records. This is due to the fact that this report consists of all past fiscal accounts and not just of the time that you got married. Consequently, your individual financial reports are separate and continue to be so even after your wedding.

Nevertheless, in certain instances, a lower score of your partner may have a serious impact on the attempt of taking out a loan together. Now, it?s a known fact that times are tough and you can?t really do without some kind of credit or another (unless you?re a millionaire). At some point of time, you might have to take out a joint loan, for example education loan for your kid, home loan, mortgage, personal loan etc. However, if your partner has a poor credit score, it may get difficult for you to secure loans jointly.

    Mortgage application

When it comes to mortgage application, you?re allowed to submit your income as well as your partner?s. This will help in increasing the frontiers of your loan. Then, the credit score of the person with the higher returns will be taken into account. Nevertheless, if your spouse holds a poor credit score, it can have serious impact on your loan application. This is especially correct if your spouse has an enormous amount of unpaid debt, as this debt amount can affect your capacity to make payments for a new mortgage. In case your spouse has already gone through a foreclosure, your loan application could be denied even if your credit score is strong.

    Education loans

As a couple, you may apply for loans to subsidize your kid?s school and college education. When the lender issues loan provisions, your joint income, debt, as well as credit scores will be taken into consideration. If your spouse has an enormous amount of unpaid debt and a record of not reimbursing borrowed funds, then it may worsen the situation even more. You may even be denied a loan. However, in case your credit score is good but your spouse?s isn?t, it?s possible to counterbalance each other?s scores. Again, the lender may provide a loan issued only in your name. Under such a situation, only your earnings could be employed to obtain huge limits.

    Personal loan

If you?re applying for a personal loan in unison with your spouse, it will definitely be influenced by your bad credit. Yet again, keeping your spouse off the personal loan application is a viable option. Nevertheless, your lender may fix your loan limits on the basis of your income, which in turn can reduce the loan amount for which you are eligible.
