Markets are staging a mild recovery after the trade deficit missed expectations. Shares of AAPL are back in the black. Get ready for Apple-mania. Apple's developer conference (WWDC) is slated to start Monday where Tim Cook will take the stage. The company is expected to make a ton of announcements. Shares of Apple?trade at 9.0x Enterprise Value / Trailing Twelve Months Free Cash Flow (including long-term marketable securities).

What's Apple Going To Announce Next Week? (Gizmodo)
Ahead of the WWDC, here's a list of what's known, what's thought and what's wished for:

  • iOS 6
  • New MacBook Pro
  • New MacBook Air
  • OS X Mountain Lion
  • Mac Pro
  • Apple TV Apps
  • New iPhone
  • Apple HDTV Set

Well, one can dream.

Macs Are Invading The Enterprise (Macworld)
The Windows-dominated work world might be coming to an end. Gartner analyst Michael Silver shared the firm's outlook on what exactly is going on in the enterprise desktop. Windows is not only being challenged by newer tablet technologies, a subtle shift is also happening that sees users demanding Macs. At most, there might be a 5% installed base of Macs. But more and more companies are "embracing" them, with 64% saying they will likely allow more Macs into their businesses over the next few years.

iOS To Provide 2% Of Google's Total Revenue In 2012 (Apple Insider)
Devices running Apple's iOS, the main competition for Google's Android OS, are expected to power the largest chunk of the search giant's mobile revenue and will represent 2% of the company's total revenue for 2012, according to Gene Munster at Piper Jaffray. He estimates Google will take in some $4.5 billion in mobile revenue over the year and Apple's iOS platform is set to be one of the biggest contributors at 40%. The estimate is conservative compared to a March report that found 80% of Google's mobile revenue came from iOS.

Windows Phone to surpass Apple's iPhone by 2016 (Apple Insider)
IDC estimates that the share of handsets running Microsoft's Windows Phone will grow to take nearly 20% of the market by 2016 at the expense of iOS and Android. Microsoft's platform is forecast to have a 19.2% share of the market by the end of 2016. Android is expected to continue its domination through 2016 with 52.9% of the market. By the end of 2016 Apple is seen as having a 19% share of the overall smartphone market.

Apple Adding Baidu As Search Engine In China (Bloomberg)
Just as it's dropping Google Maps, Apple is also courting Google's greatest enemy in China. In line with previous reports, Apple plans to add Baidu?s search engine on iPhones in China, part of a push to broaden its services and user base. The agreement to add Baidu, China?s largest search engine, to the lineup of Web tools on the iPhone could be announced as early as next week at the WWDC. A deal with Baidu, which handles about 80% of China?s Internet search queries, fits Apple's plan to gain a bigger toehold in the largest mobile-phone market. It also gives users an alternative to Google.

The New iPad's Closest Competitor Is The Old iPad (All Things Digital)
According to new data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), the breakdown in sales of the iPad 2 and the new iPad between February and April of 2012 were roughly similar. The research firm says that since launch, the new device accounted for 59% of total iPad sales, while the iPad 2 accounted for 41%. In other words, demand for the-second generation iPad, at its reduced price, isn?t all that much less than demand for the new iPad at full price. So keeping the iPad 2 around is proving to be a savvy business move, and one that?s almost certainly buttressing Apple?s already dominant share of the tablet market.

New iPhone Buyers Are Android Owners Jumping Ship (Business Insider)
More than a third of those who purchased iPhones in April were customers who gave up on their Android or Blackberry smartphones, according to a new survey from the Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP). Some 38% of people who bought an iPhone that month said their previous phone was an Android or Blackberry, and another 4% said their last phone was a Palm smartphone. By comparison, just 34% said their previous phone was an iPhone. This suggests Apple actually sold more iPhones during this period to customers who fled from other smartphone companies than they sold to existing customers upgrading from older iPhone models.

iPad Nano Pictures Surface Ahead Of WWDC (ZooGue)
An anonymous source has provided pictures of an iPad with miniature proportions. The images give a great look at the housing of what may be the ?iPad Nano,? which has recently attracted so much speculative attention. Instead of being the rumored 7.85 inches diagnostically, the display will take on a 7.58 inch form factor. When the iPad was originally released it was criticized for being a ?giant iPhone?, but today it is the leader of the tablet breed. A 7.58 inches iPad might provoke such comments, but Amazon and Samsung have proven that their tablets are not strictly made to be 10.1 inches.

CHARTS: The Hedge Fund Industry Lives And Dies By Apple (Business Insider)
A stunning slide from Adam Parker at Morgan Stanley in his latest monthly macro strategy. One chart shows the ongoing decline of hedge fund profits ever since the mid 90s. The second basically shows that over the last few years, hedge fund returns have become more and more closely related to Apple. We know that Apple is a freak of nature stock that so many hedge funds have been bullish on for years. But we didn't realize the extent to which the industry performance were correlated.

US gen apologizes for Afghan deaths in airstrike

PATROL BASE PUL-I-ALAM, Afghanistan (AP) ? The top commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan offered a somber apology on Friday in an eastern province where officials say 18 civilians ? half of them children ? were killed in a coalition airstrike this week.

U.S. Marine Gen. John Allen spent several hours with local Afghans to express his regrets about Wednesday's pre-dawn raid to capture a Taliban operative in Baraki Barak district of Logar province.

"We take these deaths very seriously and I grieve with their families," Allen told the provincial governor, an elderly man with a long, white beard and gray turban. "I have children of my own, and I feel the pain of this."

Hours after Allen's visit, the U.S.-led coalition issued a statement saying that it had completed its initial assessment of the operation and confirmed that "in addition to the insurgents killed during the operation, it's also responsible for the unintended, but nonetheless tragic, death of Afghan civilians."

Nighttime raids on militants taking cover in villages are a major irritant in Afghan President Hamid Karzai's relationship with the international military coalition. Karzai says the raids put civilians at risk of injury or death. Military officials say such operations are key to capturing and killing Taliban leaders.

Allen left his office in the Afghan capital in the early afternoon and boarded a Blackhawk helicopter that flew him 25 minutes south to Logar.

He met first with the governor, Mohammad Tahir Sabari. The two sat in overstuffed chairs in Sabari's office, each cupping the other man's hands in his own.

"I wanted to come immediately to see you after this tragedy and to offer you, personally, my apologies, my condolences and my regrets," Allen told the governor.

The men then moved to a large conference room where about 35 people ? relatives of the victims, members of the provincial council, Afghan army and police officials and members of parliament ? listened stone-faced as Allen repeated his apology.

"I have come here today to apologize to you all for the tragedy that occurred two days ago," the general began.

"I know that no apology can bring back the lives of the children or the people who perished in this tragedy and this accident, but I want you to know that you have my apology and we will do the right thing by the families. We will do the right thing for the community."

The governor said the anger that boiled over in the province after the airstrike had simmered, but that the residents of Logar want the military to take punitive action against those responsible for the deaths.

"We are accepting his apology, but the people who did this ? whether they were foreigners or Afghans ? should be punished," the governor said. "If they are not punished, the apology means nothing and there will be no result."

Reporters were not allowed to stay for Allen's nearly hour-long meeting with the group, but Mohammad Akbar Stanekzai, a parliamentarian and a member of a delegation Karzai appointed to investigate the incident, recounted some of what took place behind closed doors.

"The faces of the people were very sad," Stanekzai said. "We told the people to stay relaxed, calm and to just talk with the general. They told him 'These incidents don't just happen once, but two, three, four times and they keep happening.'"

Stanekzai said the people demanded that those responsible be put on trial.

A deal signed in April was supposed to resolve the controversy surrounding night raids by putting the Afghan government in charge of such operations. Afghan troops were involved in the operation in Logar, but Karzai has put the blame squarely on the international coalition, condemning its actions and calling for it to give a fuller account of how small children were among the dead.

An Afghan doctor who examined the bodies said villagers told him that a group of Taliban fighters decided to spend the night in the house because people there were celebrating a marriage and the militants thought the wedding party would provide them cover. When NATO and Afghan troops started advancing on the house in the middle of the night, they called out for any civilians to come out, but the insurgents didn't allow them to leave, said Dr. Wali Wakil.

"The Taliban stopped them from getting out of the house," Wakil said.

He said the 18 dead civilians including four women; two older men, including a tribal leader; three teenage boys; and nine young children. Six Taliban fighters were also killed, Wakil said, citing the witnesses. Police had said previously that the district Taliban commander was killed.

Allen said the U.S.-Afghan force called in an airstrike after taking fire, presumably from inside the house, and that the troops did not know civilians were inside.

"A hand grenade was thrown. Three of our people were wounded. We called for the people who were shooting to come out, and then the situation became more grave and innocent people were killed," he said.

Last year was the deadliest on record for civilians in the Afghan war, with 3,021 killed as insurgents ratcheted up violence with suicide attacks and roadside bombs, according to the United Nations.

The number of Afghan civilians killed dropped 36 percent in the first four months of this year compared with last year ? a promising trend though the U.N. emphasizes that too many civilians are being caught up in violence as insurgents fight Afghan and foreign forces.

Anti-government forces, including the Taliban and other militants, were responsible for 79 percent of civilian casualties in the first four months of this year, according to the U.N. Afghan and foreign forces were responsible for 9 percent. It was unclear who was to blame for the remaining 12 percent.

Second-hand smoke affects bladder function in children, study suggests

ScienceDaily (June 7, 2012) ? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, parents are responsible for 90 percent of children's exposure to environmental (second-hand) tobacco smoke. Children with mothers who smoke are at even higher-risk for developing health disorders. In a presentation at the American Urological Association Annual Meeting, physicians at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital showed that second-hand cigarette smoke was associated with moderate to severe irritative bladder symptoms in children.

"Our research shows that exposure to second-hand cigarette smoke increases the risk of severe urinary disorders in children, that may otherwise be reduced or even prevented," said Joseph G. Barone, MD, an expert pediatric urologist, associate professor of surgery at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and surgeon-in-chief of Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. "Our results emphasize the importance of smoking cessation for parents. Pediatricians and family physicians are urged to discuss with parents opportunities that are available to quit smoking."

The study included children aged 4 through 17 who sought care of a pediatric urologist for irritative bladder storage symptoms including urinary urgency, increased urinary frequency and incontinence. 28 percent of children in the study were exposed to environmental tobacco smoke. More than half of the children in the study had moderate to severe symptoms, 50 percent of which were exposed to cigarette smoke within a car and 23 percent of which had mothers who smoked. The presentation noted that symptom severity increased with greater exposure to second-hand smoke; in children aged 4 through 10, the increase in severe urinary symptoms was significant.

"Cigarette smoke is an environmental toxin and dangerous to children's health -- particularly hazardous to very young and pre-pubescent children," said Dr. Barone. "Parents should make a concerted effort to reduce their child's exposure to smoke in confined places, especially in the home and in cars. Quitting smoking is the healthiest option for children."

The pediatric urology program, overseen by Dr. Barone, at the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital was ranked 35th in the nation in the 2012-13 U.S. News & World Report ranking of America's Best Children's Hospitals released on June 5.

The research was presented by Kelly Johnson, MD, chief resident of urology at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The data is considered preliminary and awaiting publication.

Sly Google wields the knife in Chinese Internet censorship tussle

Google has introduced a new feature for Chinese users that will pull back the curtain on Chinese Internet government censorship.

This week the search engine giant Google kept a polite smile on its face as it stuck its shiv in up to the hilt, introducing a feature to its Chinese site that tells users exactly when the censors have blocked a search word for being too ?sensitive.?

The Chinese government keeps its list of banned search terms secret; Google is now revealing them. But not once did Google Vice President Alan Eustace mention the word ?censorship? in his blog introducing the new feature.

Instead he noted that users in China ?are regularly getting error messages? when they search for ?a particular subset of queries.? He mentioned the word ?jiang? as a case in point ? but did not explain why such a common surname that also means ?river? should be a banned search term.

It?s because ?jiang? is the surname of former president Jiang Zemin, about whom the censors don?t want Chinese citizens to find out much because most of what is written about him on the web concerns his allegedly poor health and his role in succession struggles within the ruling Communist party.

The problem for Google users in China, and Google, is that whenever a user searched for a banned word not only would the search yield only an error message, but the connection to Google would be lost for a minute or so, which is highly inconvenient.

No wonder that Google has only 16 percent of the Chinese search engine market, way behind local competitor Baidu, with 78 percent. Baidu self-censors, so its users have no problem searching ?jiang.? Google has refused to self censor since 2010, when it withdrew from the mainland and based itself in Hong Kong.

Google?s new feature, designed, says Mr. Eustace, to ?help improve the search experience in mainland China,? will warn users when they are searching for a banned word that will cut their connection, allowing them to re-define their searchwords.

Google has identified the ?dangerous? words after analyzing the censors? response to 350,000 of the most popular search queries in China, Eustace explained. And now it is telling its users what those words are, in defiance of the Chinese government?s policy of keeping them secret.

But not too defiant. The tone of Eustace?s blog could not have been smoother nor its references to censorship more roundabout. Google, it seems, does not want to upset Beijing too much.

Perhaps that is because although the US company is pretty much out of the search engine market here, and the censors block or mess with all its products except Gmail, Google still has a big commercial interest in China.

The firm is pushing its Android mobile phone operating system hard, and successfully, with Chinese handset manufacturers. Last month it won Beijing?s approval for its $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility, a wireless device maker. Under those circumstances, it is probably best not to be too blunt when you are challenging the authorities. A polite smile to mask the knife thrust seems a wise idea.

Life After Cancer: Survivors Face New Test In Long-Term Care

By Debra Sherman
CHICAGO, June 5 (Reuters) - Mario Alberico got his education in oncology the hard way. He has lived with cancer and the long-term effects of his treatment for most of his life.
At 51, Alberico has finally assembled a team of doctors near his home in suburban Chicago to manage his care. Before that, he saw one doctor after another who failed to recognize serious health problems that stemmed from radiation and chemotherapy drugs used to treat his bone cancer decades earlier.
During his senior year of high school, Alberico, the seventh of nine children supported by his widowed mother, got radiation and rotated through 4 different chemotherapy drugs at high doses that eradicated the cancer. Each one of those drugs can have grave long-term effects.
As Alberico and many other cancer patients have learned, most doctors outside the oncology community never learned about the impact cancer treatment may have on the longer lifespan they fought to achieve.
That has deep implications for the ranks of U.S. cancer survivors, which have quadrupled to nearly 12 million people since the 1970s, according to the National Cancer Institute.
Alberico has already had several close calls. The most alarming episode happened about 10 years ago, after he attended a seminar for survivors. There he learned that adriamycin, one of the chemotherapy drugs he was treated with 24 years earlier, can affect heart function. Alberico consulted a cardiologist who found that he was on the verge of heart failure.
"I never had any symptoms," said Alberico. "I would have been dead two or three times over incidents like that."
"Once you're finished with the oncologist and you're sent back to a family doctor, it's a time bomb," said Alberico, an artist and active advocate for cancer survivors.
A survey of 1,072 primary care doctors (PCP), which include internists and family practitioners, showed that 94 percent of them were unaware of the long-term side effects of four of the most commonly used chemotherapy drugs used to treat breast and prostate cancer.
The findings were presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago this past weekend. For full coverage of the biggest annual cancer meeting:
Heart problems, such as those Alberico experienced, are common long-term side effects of chemotherapy drugs. Others include osteoporosis, nerve damage, early menopause, infertility, leukemia, and the recurrence of cancer.
"We are creating more and more survivors and we owe it to them to make sure they have good subsequent care," Dr Michael Link, a pediatric oncologist and former ASCO president. "It is an emerging problem, but it's a good problem in some ways because people are surviving."

ORGANIZED COMMUNICATION
Better treatments and an aging population are expected to fuel this trend in the coming years. At the same time, many health insurance plans will only cover oncology visits for a limited period of time, eventually pushing patients back to family doctors or internists.
"Passing off patients in this way is fine if there has been communication between the oncologist and the PCP," said Dr Otis Brawley, Chief Medical Officer of the American Cancer Society.
That means having the oncologist tell the PCP what the patient was treated with, what the potential long-term side effects might be and what to look out for. But it often does not happen. "An oncologist cannot bill for that," Brawley added.
"The thing I'm most worried about is the transitioning of the pediatric survivor of cancer into adult cancer life," he said.
The survey results also showed that about a third of the oncologists surveyed were unable to identify long-term side effects that occur after chemotherapy.
"Oncologists didn't know as much as one would think either. That was surprising," said Dr Larissa Nekhlyudov, a general internist who is the director of Cancer Research in the Department of Population Medicine at Harvard Medical School and lead author of the study.
"When people attack primary care physicians, I remind them that it wasn't long ago when oncologists didn't think about survivorship either," Nekhlyudov said.
She said her aim was to highlight a growing problem, and the need to shift from a traditional approach of care that solely focused on acute treatment and getting the patient into remission to helping doctors recognize the long-term side effects and help patients cope. Sharing information is becoming all the more crucial as dozens of new cancer drugs reach the market, each with their own risk profile.
"There's no way a PCP can know all the late effects of these drugs. There's too much and they keep changing," Nekhlyudov said. "This will become more important as a discipline of study. This needs to be taught in medical schools. There's some movement, but very little."
Dr Carol Rosenberg, director of Living in the Future (LIFE) Cancer Survivorship Program at NorthShore University HealthSystem in suburban Chicago, said she recently obtained a grant for a pilot program teaching residents and interns about the long-term effects of cancer treatment.
"If a 50-year-old woman came to the hospital with shortness of breath and had a history of breast cancer, there are a lot of (doctors) who would not know that the drugs could have caused cardiac issues," she said.
"If it wasn't taught to them in medical school, how would they know?" Rosenberg asked. (Reporting by Debra Sherman; Editing by Michele Gershberg and Cynthia Osterman)

(AP) ? "If Dad calls, tell him I got too close to being dead but I'm O.K. I was real lucky. I'll write again soon."

That poignant message never reached the mother of Army Sgt. Steve Flaherty. He was killed in Vietnam in 1969 before he could mail the letters he was carrying, including one he might have been writing when he died. The letters were taken by the Vietnamese after his death, U.S. officials said in releasing excerpts on Monday.

The letters, chronicling the carnage and exhaustion of war, were given to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in exchange for a Vietnamese soldier's diary that was taken from his body by an American GI. The letters will be returned to Flaherty's family in South Carolina.

Vietnamese Defense Minister Phung Quang Thanh and Panetta made the exchange in a ceremony in which the Vietnamese also agreed to open three new sites in the country for excavation by the United States to search for troop remains from the war. Acidic soil in Vietnam erodes bones quickly, leaving in many cases only teeth for military teams to use to try and identify service members.

Ron Ward, U.S. casualty resolution specialist at the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command in Hanoi, said there are at least four U.S. troops believed to be lost in the three areas that are being opened. That leaves eight sites still restricted by the Vietnamese, he said.

Memories of the Vietnam War are fading for many Americans, and the war is the stuff of textbooks for others. But it is brought vividly alive in Sgt. Flaherty's letters. The mail from the Columbia, S.C., native to his mother, Lois, and two women identified only as Mrs. Wyatt and Betty, offer emotional accounts of his fear ? and also his determination.

"I felt bullets going past me," Flaherty writes to Betty. "I have never been so scared in my life."

"We took in lots of casualties and death," he writes. "We dragged more bodies of dead and wounded than I can ever want to forget."

"Thank you for your sweet card. It made my miserable day a much better one but I don't think I will ever forget the bloody fight we are having. ... RPG rockets and machine guns really tore my rucksack."

By 1969, the war was sharply dividing Americans back home, but Flaherty tells Mrs. Wyatt he still believes in the mission.

"This is a dirty and cruel war but I'm sure people will understand the purpose of this war even though many of us might not agree," he writes.

In another section of the letter to his mother, Flaherty reassures her that he will get some rest.

"I definitely will take R&R," he wrote. "I don't care where so long as I get a rest, which I need so badly, soon. I'll let you know exact date."

Flaherty, who was 22 when he was killed in March 1969, was returned home for burial. Assigned to the 101st Airborne, he died in the northern section of South Vietnam.

It's clear he saw some heavy combat.

"Our platoon started off with 35 men but winded up with 19 men when it was over," he tells his mother. "We lost platoon leader and whole squad."

Officials said parts of Flaherty's letters were read in propaganda broadcasts by the Vietnamese during the war.

This is the first time such a joint exchange of war artifacts has occurred, they said.

Vietnamese Col. Nguyen Phu Dat had kept Sgt. Flaherty's letters, and last August he mentioned them in an online publication.

Early this year, Robert Destatte, a retired Defense Department employee who had worked for the POW/MIA office, noticed the publication, and the Pentagon began to work to get the letters back to Flaherty's family. Flaherty's sister-in-law, Martha Gibbons, 73, of Irmo, S.C., said she learned of the letters' existence about six weeks ago.

Gibbons said her husband met Flaherty when the boy was a 6-year-old living in a Japanese orphanage and her husband persuaded his mother, with whom they lived, to adopt the child. He grew up to be a well-liked, athletic boy, who dropped out of college to join the Army despite a baseball scholarship.

"He decided to enlist in the Army and go fight for his country in Vietnam and he didn't make it back, " said Kenneth L. Cannon, 80, of Prosperity, S.C., Flaherty's uncle. "It was very hard to take. It was hard."

Cannon said the family was told that he was in a field, taking a break to eat lunch or write letters.

"He never let us know how afraid and scared he was," Gibbons said. "He was in danger. We knew it was bad. We just didn't know how bad, I guess."

She's thrilled the information has been released.

"I had a very emotional morning all over again. But it was a wonderful emotion this time. It's good for both countries. It's good for all the soldiers who were killed for both countries." Gibbons said the family would store the letters with Flaherty's medals, scrapbook and flag.

Defense officials reviewing the packet of papers given to Panetta said it appears there are three sets of letters, including the four written by Flaherty. It was not clear how many other service members' letters were there, but officials were going through them Monday

The small diary belonged to Vu Dinh Doan, a Vietnamese soldier who was killed in a machine gun fight, according to defense officials. They said a Marine, Robert "Ira" Frazure of Walla Walla, Wash., saw the diary ? with a photo and some money inside ? on the chest of the dead soldier and took it back to the U.S.

The diary came to light earlier this year when the sister of a friend of Frazure's was doing research for a book and Frazure asked her help in returning the diary. The sister, Marge Scooter, brought the diary to the PBS television program "History Detectives."

The show then asked the Defense and State departments to help return the diary.

There are nearly 1,300 cases of troops still unaccounted for, and officers briefing Panetta said about 600 of those remains could be recoverable.

Ward said that opening the three new sites will enable the U.S. to try to find:

? Two Air Force members who were lost when their plane was shot down in Quang Binh Province in central Vietnam in 1967.

? An Army private first class who went missing when he was out with his unit on a search-and-destroy mission in 1968 in the tri-border area of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

? A Marine whose plane went down in Quang Tri Province. Another Marine on the plane ejected and was rescued.

What Plants To Use In Your Backyard Garden

bryifijjet Posted by bryifijjet on 14 hours ago

Have you been told so many horror stories by friends, family or acquaintances about home renovations that it has made you think twice about fixing up your home? Behind every home improvement horror story lies a lack of research and advanced planning. Investing a little time in self-education takes a lot of the hassle out of home improvements. Continue reading to learn great tips that will help you do home improvement the right way.

When you plan to replace your siding, remember that it could be really expensive to install stucco on your home. The investment can be quite large. Even if you have your mind set on a specific look, you may be able to achieve it using more cost-effective materials.

Patching minor roof cracks can be accomplished using aluminum tape. Peel the paper backing from the sticky take before you apply it to the cleaned surface. This ensures a waterproof seal over any cracks.

Read your home improvement contract before you sign it. Legal terms can be confusing, but it?s important that you read through it thoroughly so that you know what you can and cannot expect. Failure to be diligent can lead to mistakes or, in the case of an unscrupulous contractor, being taken advantage of. Although you might trust him, be sure to read the contract.

Make good use of a home?s entrance by placing organizational tools just inside the doorway. A shoe bench, decorative key ring holder, mail tray and a mirror are attractive and useful. Adding a few of these items can greatly enhance your home?s organization.

You can greatly improve the safety in your home by gathering your family members and discussing safety escape routes. In an emergency, it is easy to panic. Working out safety escape routes before an emergency strikes can save you and your family members? lives. Make your plan, and practice it with your family.

The windows in your home may need to be improved. Bring those windows up to date! Install windows that are glazed two times. Although replacement windows are expensive, the windows will reduce your utility bills. New windows will make your home more secure. If money is of concern, you can also look to either changing out your curtains or repainting your frames to develop a different look.

When you are planning home improvement projects, it can be useful to look around for some inspiration. Books and magazines can be good for an idea of what to do. Get color samples and fabric swatches from your home improvement store. If you have a good idea of what you want, you can confidently begin work on your project when you are ready.

Motion detector lights are a great improvement to make. Not only will you save some money, but you will also be able to add some extra security to the home. Motion detector lights turn on automatically when an intruder approaches, providing you with the element of surprise and saving you money on electricity! Intruders are discouraged from approaching your house due to the lights activating as they approach.

You should follow the advice of a professional. You have already done the research you need and you?ve found a good contractor. It is in your best interest to believe what he is telling you. If he says a change will look bad, it probably will. This rule is especially true when it comes to maintaining a budget, as the contractor knows the costs involved. Make sure you consider what he is saying.

Improving the look of your home can be easy if you want it to be. Most homes need repair, maintenance or both. The homeowner that can go beyond these basics and do additional work, will be rewarded with a more pleasant home and an increase in that home?s value. Use the above tips and techniques to learn everything you can about home improvement.

Katniss Vs. Hermione: Who Is Queen Of Movie Awards?

Emma Stone, Kristen Wiig and Rooney Mara are also up for Best Female Performance tonight!
By Kara Warner

Jennifer Lawrence in "The Hunger Games"

If you like your leading ladies with a touch of chutzpah, a natural survival instinct and great comedic timing, the nominees for Best Female Performance at this year's 2012 MTV Movie Awards are right up your alley.

Here's a look at your five lovely nominees:

Emma Stone, "Crazy, Stupid, Love"
Emma Stone has quickly become America's sweetheart, further solidified by her just plain likable performance in the ensemble romantic comedy "Crazy, Stupid, Love." Not to mention her other Movie Award-nominated moment, in which her rain-soaked character gets exactly what she wants: one of the year's steamiest onscreen kisses from heartthrob Ryan Gosling.

Emma Watson, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2"
The fact that the "Harry Potter" movies were able to keep the same actors in their roles for eight movies over the course of 10 years deserves some sort of historical award, let alone its Movie Awards recognition over the years. Emma Watson's dedicated and fan-loved years of service to Hermione Granger are everything the Best Female Performance award is all about.

Jennifer Lawrence, "The Hunger Games"
From the moment Jennifer Lawrence was announced as Katniss Everdeen, the pressure was on the Oscar-nominated actress to deliver on millions of fans' hopes, dreams and general love for Suzanne Collins' respected, role-model-worthy heroine. The fact that the film went on to totally dominate the box office is due in large part to Lawrence's compelling, award-worthy performance.

Kristen Wiig, "Bridesmaids"
Fans of "Saturday Night Live" have known the scope of Kristen Wiig's comedic chops for years, along with those who loved her scene-stealing moments in movies like "Knocked Up" and "MacGruber," but it wasn't until the release of "Bridesmaids" last summer that the entire nation fell in love with Wiig's talents, both her acting and writing.

Rooney Mara, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" One look at Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and you can see the actress' commitment to the role, without her uttering a single word. Mara's transformation is as remarkable as her compelling, calculated and cold take on the brilliant hacker/ master of revenge/ mystery solver extraordinaire.

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to cast your vote for Best Hero and Best Movie now! The "Movie Awards Punk'd Pre-Party" starts at 8 p.m. ET, followed by the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards live tonight at 9 p.m. ET!

World News - Assad: Syria faces 'real war waged from the outside'

Thirteen men were shot dead at close range in Syria. Activists claim the killers were government militia. The government blames the rebels. NBC's John Ray reports. Some of the images in this report may be disturbing.

By Alastair Jamieson and msnbc.com news services

Syrian President Bashar Assad has said that his country is engaged in a "real war" with outside forces and denied any role in the Houla massacre, which he said was carried by ?monsters.?

In his first public address since January, he warned he would not be lenient on those he blamed for violence in the country, and promised that a 15-month-old crisis would end soon if Syrians pulled together.

Dsk / AFP - Getty Images

An image grab taken from Syrian state TV shows Syrian President Bashar al-Assad addressing the parliament in Damascus on Sunday.

In a speech to parliament, he repeated many of his earlier pledges to maintain a crackdown on opponents he describes as terrorists implementing a foreign conspiracy, while offering dialogue with those opposition figures who have avoided armed conflict or outside backing.

He made his comments a day after international envoy Kofi Annan said the specter of all-out civil war was growing daily in Syria and the world needed to see actions, not words, from Assad.

Jim Muir, the BBC correspondent in Beirut, said: ?Anybody hoping that President Assad's first public speech since January might open up some lines of advance towards a solution will have been disappointed.?

In his hour-long address, Assad offered no specific response to Annan's plea for bold steps to end the conflict.

Thousands of people have been killed in a crackdown on protests against Assad, which erupted in March last year and have become increasingly militarized, destabilizing neighboring Lebanon and raising fears of regional turmoil.

"This crisis is not an internal crisis. It is an outside war carried out by inside elements," Assad said, looking relaxed as he spoke to parliamentarians. "If we work together, I confirm that the end to this situation is near."

'True monstrosities'
Last month's massacre in Houla of 108 people, mostly women and children, triggered global outrage and warnings that Syria's relentless bloodshed - undimmed by Annan's April 12 ceasefire deal - could engulf the Middle East.

Sunni Muslim powers, particularly wealthy Gulf Arab states, have strongly supported the uprising against Assad, an Alawite closely allied with Shi'ite Iran and Hezbollah.

Western powers have accused Syrian armed forces and pro-Assad militia of responsibility for the May 25 Houla killing, a charge Damascus has denied.

Despite the discovery of another atrocity following the recent massacre in Huola, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad showed no sign of relinquishing his power. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

"What happened in Houla...and what we described as ugly and abominable massacres, or true monstrosities - even monsters do not perpetrate what we have seen," Assad said.

He said his country was facing a war waged from outside and that terrorism was escalating despite political steps including last month's election for parliament, whose new members Assad was addressing.

"We are not facing a political problem because if we were this party would put forth a political programme. What we are facing is (an attempt) to sow sectarian strife and the tool of this is terrorism," Assad said.

"The issue is terrorism. We are facing a real war waged from the outside," Assad said.

Annan, the joint United Nations and Arab League envoy for Syria, told an Arab League meeting in Qatar on Saturday that Assad must make "bold and visible" steps immediately to change his military stance and honor his commitment to cease all violence.

Annan criticized Assad for failing to comply with a peace plan to end the conflict and said his forces were carrying out atrocities, arbitrary arrests and other abuses.

The United Nations says Syrian forces have killed more than 9,000 people in a crackdown on protests against Assad. Syria blames the violence on foreign-backed Islamist militants it says have killed more than 2,600 soldiers and security force members.

Anybody hoping that President Assad's first public speech since January might open up some lines of advance towards a solution will have been disappointed.

How To Find An Affordable Auto Repair Anywhere ...

Have you owned your beloved car for a long time and, although it’s always run like a dream, it suddenly needs to have an auto repair? If so, before you start panicking about the expense, follow these tips so you can find an affordable auto repair without spending that much time looking.

Start your search for affordable prices with a few phone calls to dealers and garages in your area. Your goal here is just to find a base price for the specific products you need for your auto repair, so asking over the phone about prices is good enough. Push them for the cheapest price they can offer and ask about installation too. Make sure you also check if it’s possible for you to buy the products elsewhere and just pay them to install them. If it is, mark that down on your information list as they may be a dealer or garage you want to go back to.

Next, get on the Internet and search for the same products but with dealers and sellers out of town, or even out of state. You may be shocked to see, because these sellers often don’t have large brick and mortar stores, they can offer you prices that are 30-50 percent off what a dealer in your home town is trying to charge you and some will even ship products for free too.

Bookmark the sellers that offer the cheapest prices then, before you place a final order, run a quick search online looking for any customer reviews former clients have written about them. If the ones you pull up are mainly complimentary and talk about the great prices and good customer service, you’ll rarely have a problem placing an order with a company like this. Do it. Then, when your shipment arrives in just a few days, you can go back to the dealer in town who said they could do the installation and arrange for a time to drop off your car.

BlackBerry Music Gateway goes on sale, brings a little NFC into your life

BlackBerry Music Gateway

RIM showed off the BlackBerry Music Gateway with the promise of a June release, and it's clearly not wasting any time: the first of the month has seen the tiny audio bridge go on sale. It'll set you back $50, but you'll get a conduit for music from any Bluetooth-packing device, whether or not it has that signature 7-dot logo on the back. The extra-special BlackBerry affection comes through NFC support, where equipped phones like the Bold 9930 can pair faster through a friendly tap. Buying straight from the source will lead to a one- to two-week wait, but if you're looking for the most polished way to share your musical tastes from a BlackBerry or PlayBook, it's likely worth being patient.
